The relay is part of the on board supply control unit or "J519 - Vehicle voltage control unit " as Skoda call it, other people call them body modules, they have lots of names. I sometimes call them central electrics units.

On other late models such as the Golf 5, no wiper functions are available with the bonnet open, I will have to check that as I am not sure on the Fabia 2.

mmmm there seems to be a few issues on the web rethese boxes (j519) and wipers.
The car is completely stock, no mods. Seems I will have to get it scanned to home in on this intermittent fault.
One thread refers to checking earth from J519 to battery. What colour wire are we looking for.
I feel knackered without a manual or wiring diagram to refer to.

The manual or wiring diagram is one thing to be short of, not having a diagnostic system to see switch inputs and run the motor via output tests is a shortage you are not even aware of.
