I had my first glitch today. It was raining cats and dogs, and the A56 through Altrincham up to Sale was showing six miles of stationary traffic on the Nav. After crawling along I came to a stop at yet another red light, popped the car into neutral and took my foot off the clutch... The engine stopped as expected, but then I got a warning in the DIS saying "Stop/Start Fault". The hill hold disengaged, the parking brake engaged, and I got a message saying I needed to start the engine using the start button. I did this immediately, and got another message in the DIS saying "Fault in Stop Start System. The Stop Start system has been disabled" and I noticed the glowplug light on the dash was flashing. Yikes!

I waited until I got going again to see if the car would decide it had recovered, but the glowplug light was still flashing away. Twenty yards further on when I stopped again, I pressed the start button to switch the car off, then again to restart. After all the usual needle-sweepery and christmas-tree dash lights that always show on startup, everything reset to normal (including the glowplug light), and stop/start worked fine for the rest of the journey.

I will hook up VCDS later on to see if anything was logged, and report back. I hope it's not the onset of a problem. Maybe the car just doesn't like Altrincham and is unwilling to stop?

Sale or Trafford I could understand, but Alty? Surely that's prime Audi territory

(Joking aside, keen to hear updates on this. Manual car I assume? Do you always use stop/start?)

Hee hee. Maybe it was just keen to get out of the rain in the underground car park beneath the office?

It's a manual, yes. I always use the stop/start. The only time it doesn't seem to engage is when the car is mid way through a DPF regen cycle. I have been stopped before now with all four heated seats on, the mirror heaters on, the heated rear window on and the screen on demist setting, and it still cuts the engine. Never had a fault until today, though.

Wow, that is spooky! I was driving to Manchester on Saturday, crawling along Princess Parkway on the way to the match and exactly the same thing happened to me. Stopped at lights and a message saying I had to restart the engine manually appeared (mine is an auto box) and when I restarted the engine, the orange engine management light came on but the car drove ok. Next day, the light had disappeared, but the same thing happened on Monday but this time the glowplug light was flashing. I booked it into Crewe Audi who looked at it yesterday and said that the fault was caused by a distorted throttle housing that wasn't allowing the throttle to open and close properly. They replaced it and it appears to have done the trick. No idea why this is related to the glowplug?

Well, I finally got around to scanning the car after the MIL came on. Here is my problem:

Faulty throttle position sensor, or a distorted throttle housing, I wonder?

Mine is going in to Stoke Audi in the morning. I will also ask them to look at the motors on the rear A/C system too:

This is why I think I'm gonna love VCDS and get my money back on what I paid for it. The car obviously stores up all these intermittent faults, but does not tell the owner about them.

The question is when you take it in to Audi, I guess they say nothing, so after the warranty runs out and an intermittent fault becomes a permanent fault, you then get to pay big bucks to get it fixed.

MF you must let us know how the left and right rear upper body vent motors get on - and your throttle obviously!

    Cheers

To be fair to my dealer, they have informed me of and fixed issues on past Audis that I knew nothing about before the car went in to them for servicing. I have printed off my fault scan from VCDS and I will give it to the service receptionist when I arrive tomorrow. I have also reset my car to factory spec with regards to the tweaks I did with VCDS - something I always do before the car goes in. I will let you know how I get on tomorrow. Hopefully they can fix everything in one visit

    Cheers!

Well, after two visits to the dealer, this appears to be fixed. On my first visit, they reported there were no faults stored and couldn't do anything. I definitely didn't clear them with VCDS, but I accepted it was possible I had done it accidentally. The fault reappeared this morning - both the Engine Management Light and the flashing Glowplug Light pinged on. I took the car straight to the dealer, left it running and handed them the keys... They were really good - the master tech left the job he was currently working on and got straight onto working on my car.

I watched through the viewing window into the workshop as some parts were cleaned and refitted, then tested and found still to be faulty, so were replaced. I have been asked very nicely by the dealer not to go into more detail than this on a public forum, although a full explanation of the fault and the cause were given when the master tech came up to see me.

    Cheers!

Well that's not fair, in the spirit of openess and transparency, Audi should be more than prepared to detail the issue, as I'm sure it's not serious. It's just more fuel to the corporate hatred fire.

Perhaps you could PM me the detail for reference.

    Cheers

Hmmm, why would they not want information being put online? What is it to the dealership?
