Thanks for that, I will go and check it out. Most used buys are a bit of a risk.

From what I have learned, car was owned by vw financial services until march 2012, then privately until now. It was serviced in March and MOTd in September.

I suppose the big two to look out for are DMF and turbo, neither of which would be easy to hide in a test drive. Otherwise the cars condition suggests it has been looked after.

As been's said selling to the trade is not the same as change of keeper. When selling to the trade, trader advises DVLA which then places a label on existing PNC entry (the last registered keeper) to show **IN TRADE** In your case, HPFI is telling you that the last registered keeper was changed in March. From the info in OP's post.
Yes, it would be daft for HPFI to tell that the last change of keeper was a dealer. Apart from the enforcement detail of parking and speeding tickets: who does the enforcement authority send the fine to? There is also the anti-crime element. Application has to be made to DVLA for any earlier reg keeper details

Six months would be too long for a dealer to hold an asset. They would've traded out in that time, failing a customer sale.
When I bought my '06 in '07 at Sinclair Swansea the accountant said that they keep vehicles only for three months since the costs of forecourt/showroom rotation amongst their other branches, and valeting, advertising and sales staff time, plus depreciation over that period was the max their size of business model allowed. If they don't sell, then they chop it back out into either the open trade or a VW closed trade auction. I was lucky as it'd been 75 days they'd had it (overpriced methinks!) And it was already being documented for the auction. So was able to deal as they had a customer for my B5.5 manual. I actually saw their earlier closed auction paperwork, overall there was nett a grand in my deal for them. That's after I'd got extra goodies fitted, two years' continuation of manufacturer's warranty, six months' tax, tank of fuel, and some free insurance. '07 was at the end of the boom years, dunno what margins major dealers are having to work within now

VW Financial Services indicates business lease out

Thanks Richard, I understand business lease out to be different from hire companies such as Hertz and the like? Sounds more like a company car to me than that tbh.

I'm not sure how these cars re-enter the trade, possibly at auctions or other dealers? If this were a back street garage I'd be much more concerned.

However as a main Toyota franchise I'd expect them to have certain standards for selling other used Marques on their forecourts. Couple this with the fact they were willing to slap on 12 months Toyota used warranty instead of 3, as long as it drives well during the test drive then I shouldn't be worrying too much about previous ownership (problem with being able to do too much home research!)

Sorry if that sounds a little too naive!

Vehicle would be registered to the rental company or their financial division had it been. Yours is long lease I reckon for reps. VW offer a comprehensive deal for fleet owners like their vans' division does.

Surprised that a Toyota main dealer would be selling and offering support for another marque. Dunno how they'd get it back into trade. Guess they must've taken it in PX for one of theirs at a trade-in price too high for the auction route? How does the price stack up against Glasses Guide? Did you check out the September MOT date on the DfT website?

Dunno how you're fixed for time but if you're still hesitant, you can apply to DVLA for last reg. keeper's details saying you want to check on condition prior to purchase as vehicle is in trade.

Good luck anyways! My experience with Beadles Bromley main dealer means I won't even step inside their branch ever again, despite all their 'phone calls, invites to view parties (with canapes!), etc. Coupla years later, my former employer switched to Skoda for their fleet. Dunno why...

Speak to VW and get a history on the car, they were very good when we purchased the wife's 08 plate estate last year, it was also ex VWFS, turned out to a VW reps car, we purchased it with 94k on the clock, as we took the view the wife does 6-8k per year so the mileage would slowly even out over our ownership.

A local trader had brought it at a VW auction, and I think that the mileage put a few people off, despite a full VWSH including a recent service, so we made an offer which they declined at first and they called us back a day later to accept our offer if still interested in the car needless to say I up the part ex price I wanted which they agreed, turned out they had a buyer for our part ex, so for the dealer it was two quick deals.

Went to see the car today, looked at all the relevant paperwork, test drove it and was very happy to do a deal on it.

Drives very differently to the petrol I am in at the moment (= nearly stalling setting off in 2nd!) but surprisingly the on-paper 12.4 second 0-60 is hardly evident in normal driving, probably because I'm quite a steady driver regardless. Anyway the pull is impressive and the engine sounds very relaxed at 70mph. Was also pleasantly surprised with the consumption as well, which is the main reason for changing cars in the first place.

The full Toyota used car warranty i have been given is also better than I thought - no maximum claim limit and it covers all major diesel components including turbo and injectors. Not sure whether the DMF is covered and whether this would be argued to be wear and tear. However engine sounded fine (for a PD) and no worrying rattles or hesitations.

Nearly time to change the sig! Thanks for all the advice on this subject.

To put you mind at rest i usually change cars frequently hardly ever keep one longer than 11 month....

But i do look for cars with less owners as i find they usually are in better condition and have a better service record.
