I am not sure, but after taking the trim/panels off the drivers side of my golf (under the steering column etc) I noticed that there is a cable that moves the position of the fans direction (front wind screen, feet, feet and centre blowers, centre blowers) its a bit scary taking these panels off as you think something is gonna snap i used this link VWVortex.com - DIY - Removing interior parts II (dash trim, brake light switch, radio, cupholder, radio/ HVAC cage)
