I've done this to help others in the future. Colour coded vacuum lines depending on what the line does. Thanks for the diagram.

The silver sauce I think is part of the actuator for the turbo flap the other flap you mentioned could be the egr valve

From what I've since found out, it seems to be the actuator for a flap that closes and stops airflow into the engine to reduce shudder when the engine is switched off. Can't remember where I read that now.

I've found another vacuum-operated device not shown on that vacuum pipework diagram. It's to the right of the engine block and seems to be spliced into a coolant hose. Any ideas?

How do I take off the panel beneath the windscreen for access to the battery and brake servo? I need to get to the servo as I see the pipe is split on the angled section where it goes into the servo unit. I don't know if it's double walled and therefore not leaking as I can't get to it yet.

I can now see why the engine barely turns over and the dash almost goes completely dark when cranking - the battery fitted is a tiny little thing usually seen in small petrol engine cars, probably 200 or 210mm long. It isn't the 278mm long specimen that seems to be the correct size battery. So I've bought a cheapy online tonight. Looks like the battery clamp and bolt is missing from my car though.

Oh, where can I find the diagnostic connector socket? I've searched high and low. I checked under the little rubber mat in the rectangular tray behind the handbrake, checked under the steering wheel area, in the glovebox, under the golovebox... can't find it anywhere.

The wing mirrors appear to be electric fold-in types as the switch has the symbol, but nothing happens. Likely a fuse has blown? Handbook says there should be a card in fuse cover showing which fuses are which, but mine has none.

Sorry to hear you're having so many problems with the car. I'm pretty new to the forum but I've found a couple of other forum entries that might help you:

    OBD port location
    VAG-COM/OBD Port locations

    Fuse identification
False warning light - door open - 02 Passat - VW Forum :: Volkswagen Forum

    Hope they're useful.

The diagnostic port is above the foot pedals/below the steering column, the socket is mounted long axis front to back, wide end of scart plug to the right (unless you have a left hand drive like Sam!).

Thanks for those links A3. Caldirun, I've searched and searched and cannot find anything beneath the dash. Lay on my back looking up, directly above pedals as well, and there's nothing there, just a plastic panel which has a space in it shaped just right to hold the car user manual. I've received the diagnostic interface cable today but can't use it! Where's the flipping diagnostic connector hiding in my silly car!?

My car doesn't look like that. Next to the handbrake there's a twin cup holder, and behind that is a recessed tray with little rubber mat inside but nothing underneath. The fuel flap switch visible in your pic is located in my driver's door at the bottom, next to a boot open switch.

Beneath the dash I finally found the hole where the OBD socket should be. It's not there. I removed the cover on the side of the dash where the fuseboard is and was able to see right in to where the OBD hole is, but no sign of the connector anywhere.

I read while searching the net for its location, of an OBD missing socket in a 2003 Passat that was eventually found behind the dash with a "telematics" thing plugged into it. Looks like tomorrow I need to remove the plastic panel below the steering wheel and see if I can find it.

Incidentally, I have now got some turbo boost... I connected vacuum pump and manometer earlier. Found vacuum leaking away instantly and heard a hissing which I narrowed down to the solenoid valve that operates the anti-shudder device on the air inlet ducting to the manifold. I soon realised that some muppet had connected the two pipes the wrong way around. When not energised, the outlet to the anti-shudder device is open to atmospheric pressure, and since this was connected to the vacuum pipe, it was just pulling in air.

The vacuum still leaks away a bit too quickly which I will investigate when I get time, but now the turbo actuator moves up and down, fully retracted when idling, if that's normal? And the anti-shudder flap works too. I did notice that the vacuum pressure takes quite some time to build after, say, pressing the brake pedal a few times to use some of it up.

It is now much better to drive, but the turbo seems to kick in when it feels like it, and is erratic. You feel a surge of power which then suddenly vanishes. I'm not stuck doing 40mph in a 60 zone when the road goes slightly uphill now though, although if in 4th, it is very, very slow to gather speed.

Sorry I thought it was a B5 you had, The obd port in your car should be above the clutch pedal. Perhaps some gulpin pushed it out of it's clips and it's just below the panel?
