    Hi Everyone

I have/had a 2004 A4 1.9tdi auto. 163000 miles. Drove like a dream until last Tuesday. Entered motorway made a bloody big clunk and stopped. Come to put it in gear and it just makes a whirring noise. Switched off and on and wouldnt drive. Local garage looked at it and said gearbox has gone.

Is it really that black & white could it be anything else?? never had any problems before. How much would it be to replace gearbox?? It is off to the scrapyard tomorrow but Im clinging onto the hope there could be another explanation or not that expensive to fix - or should I just wave goodbye??

look online to see how much the car is worth in a driving state (mileage, condition etc) then price up a replacement/refrurb gearbox from online or a breakers.

could you get a second opinion on the damage?

You need to get the box out first, not a cheap job budget 3 hrs labour plus time for checking the box. Add install of another box and new fluid and you wont have much change out of 500 excluding the cost of the replacement box

The garage thats looked at it has drained the gearbox oil said it had metal fragments in it so gearbox has gone. Gearbox hasnt been taken out. As it got towed there Im stuck with only one opinion has I cant drive it anywhere else.

If it was in good working order I would get around £3500 for him, he has s-line body kit on and full leather interior.

The money I get when I scrap him is for a new runaround and so far my budget is stretching to a mondeo or focus..... bit of a painful drop down

The scrap man will give you a couple of hundred maximum!!You could sell it as parts for loads more (if your willing to work at stripping it and waiting for all the bits to sell)If it were me I would bite the bullet and spend the money on the gearbox. If you aren't happy with it you could at least sell it as a runner and get back your gear box money and a bit more (will still work out more than what the scrappy will give)

A grand tops will get you back a good motor, OK you can buy a 2004 Mondeo for the price of the repairs but you'll quickly dislike it and you don't know what it's going to need repair wise until it's too late to get out of the deal.
