The first time I got into the Avant, switched on and was warned that the tailgate was open, I thought "silly me".

The second time I got into the Avant, switched on and was warned that the tailgate was open, I thought "silly kids".

The third time I got into the Avant, switched on and was warned that the tailgate was open, I asked everyone in the house if they had used the boot and they all fervently denied it.

I can only think that the tailgate is popping, maybe when the car is unlocked.

Has anyone come across such a thing?

    Was the tailgate actually open?

If not you probably have a sensor problem.
It it was you have a more worrying security and release mechanism or switch problem.
Have you checked there is nothing stuck in the lock mechanism? I had similar problems on a previous car, turned out to be a cosmetic plastic screw cover (mfi style) which had fallen into the lock mechasim as i was loading the boot. Good check saved a trip to the garage.

    Timothy

Looks as if our US cousins are experiencing problems with the handsfree opening function on their sedans (saloons to you and me) to the extent that Audi are disabling it until they can sort out the problem. My 5000 mile service and issues addressed - AudiWorld Forums

It is not just a sensor, it is a little popped (just one crack.)

I don't have electric or foot waving.

Sounds stupid, but do you keep your keys in your pocket? I came out to the boot lid on my saloon wide open once and put it down to tight trouser pockets and leaning on them while doing some work around the house.

I have had an issue with popping open just the boot using the key and then not being able to close it. Just kept popping right back open again until I unlocked the whole car. Not got automatic keys or anything like that. Key was in my pocket.

I do keep my keys in my pocket, and I do remove them from my pocket near the tailgate to open the front door, so a good thought, thank you, but
    1. Pressing the boot button doesn't pop it, it only unlocks it
    2. It also flashes the indicators, which I ma sure I would notice, especially at this time of year when it is normally dark.

Just tried it on my car. Pressing and holding the middle button on the remote does pop the boot, you do not need to use the release above the number plate to open it, but I do agree the lights flash. Is it possible that in getting into the car you are in some way causing the button to get pressed? Also as you have presumably just unlocked the car to get in you may not notice the extra flash of the lights as it pops. Final thought it may be that you are either in some way touching the internal release switch on the drivers door as you get in or that switch in itself is the problem.

Are you sure it is shutting properly in the first place?

I have noticed mine doesn't always lock tightly shut - you need to give it a bit of a shove
