Cheers for that everyone, now just need to find a garage as not sure about the one I went to. I know this may be a dumb question but would the work be more complicated due to it being 4 wheel drive?

Sorry Zolly but I beg to differ because getting the turbo off on a Golf 5 4 Motion is a hell of a lot more difficult than on a 2wd. We have just done one on a Passat 3C 4 Motion this morning and it doubles the time the job takes.

I would lay good money on the previous owner (not necessarily the dealer if you bought it off one) being fully aware of the problem and that is why they unloaded the car onto someone else.

Yeah could be the case, thought with it only having one owner from new and 87K on the clock it was a good buy. Just my luck to finally have the car I've lusted over for so long to cause me a headache so soon. Starting to miss my trusty old volvo!

it still is a good deal, its just got a small problem that needs sorting out and it could be a lot worse. how long have you owned it then, sounds like not very long and the dealer may be able to get it fixed for you under their warranty. don't give up on it, loads better than any volvo, imho.

Got it in Sept. Got a 3month warranty with it thro warranty wise, but although turbo is covered when you read the small print it appears parts that fail due to carbon built up are excluded so that's a bit of a worry

what sort of establishmnet did you buy it from, small backstreet dealer, main dealer etc..
technically, a used car has a 6 month warranty anyway from the trader that sold it. they can't sell you a duff motor and then wash their hands of it. check out the sales of goods act for more info about it, but in your shoes i would be talking to the seller and if they didn't co operate i would get it done and see them in the small claims court to re-imburse me my expenses.
