    Hi guys

I have just purchased a R reg (Dec97)1.8 turbo Passat estate which has a few faults.

The rear wiper motor when I flick the wiper arm forward the wiper arm occasionally moves about a 1/4 inch other times it wont move at all.

Is this a common fault which is repairable or am I going to have to replace the motor.

If I have to replace the motor is there a particular one for the estate or will any passat rear wiper motor do, there are a few on ebay so want to make sure I get the right one if I have to replace the motor.

    Hope some one can help.

    Cheers Jim

Hi Jim i have R reg passat estate and had problems with rear wiper . Mine used to operate when it wanted and not when switched sometimes.I noticed water or dampness around bottom of tailgate. After removing trim whilst sat in boot i removed mechanism . The motor was fine but through the wiper drive mechs runs a thin what looks like brass tube, through which water runs to spray onto rear screen. The tube had corroded through so no water was reaching the screen only soaking the geardrive and a quadrant gear.In short water gumming the works up and soaking the trim.I cleaned gearing out worked the mechanism by hand re-greased it .I pushed a length of thin bore plastic tube over the corroded metal tube, and re-assembled . No problems since. Its worth having a look at the gearing clean out , work by hand not a bad job really.

    Hope this helps Joey

Well I pulled the motor to pieces and checked everything internally and regreased everything but no joy.

The wiper will still move a fraction of an inch every now and again but most of the time no movement at all.

Am I over looking anything or is it time to replace the unit.

    Cheers JIm

Hi Jim if you have checked and made sure mechanism is ok, and will drive , then can you check motor to see if it is ok and getting correct voltage , and is driving gearing. If not you may be looking for a second hand unit . Hope this helps

    Hi Jim,
my passat has the same rear wiper issue as the one you describe. Were you able to resolve it?
    If so, how?
    Thanks,
    Russ

    Hi Russ

I found someone breaking a passat on ebay and got the motor and relays of them.
It turned out to be the motor its self that was faulty so I just swapped them over and everything was sorted.

    Cheers Jim

    Thanks Jim,
