I did lap the valves in as they was quite a bit of carbon on the valves and piston tops. Think I'll get the head checked first before I do the rings as if its cracked will be cheaper to scrap the car.

Started the strip down today and when i removed the exhaust manifold. No 1 exhaust port was running with oil. this must mean either I,ve botched up the stem seal.(dont think so as it was smoking before), valve guide or head cracked.
thanks for all you help chaps.

Take the valve out first it might just be the seal, we all make mistakes that's why they put erasers on pencils. If it's toast there's loads of VAG breakers There's one on fleabay for 50 quid from a guy in Northern Ireland that breaks VAG

To be honest mate I don't know if that head would fit. I sent the link because you said you might scrap it and I wanted to show you that a replacement head would make it live again. I'd check yell for a local specialist breaker they would have the right one in stock. Lot of work and hassle with return postage etc if you buy a wrong/dodgy head off flea bay. Check your local paper too you might pick up a crashed one for the price of a head

    Update...
    Replaced head still smoked
have now replaced piston rings and just started it. seems to have worked
Did notice the thermostat had broken the location pit the nipple pushes against meaning it would never open, maybe causing the problem in the first place. Will find out Saturday when I can give it a good run.
