Hi, new to the Forum, so hello to all.

I have just bought an 1997 A4 TDI my 5th Audi but first A4. The rear speakers are standard and a bit sad. So 10 minute job to swamp them, over (famous last words!)

    How do you either:-
    • Get the grills off without breaking them!
    • Remove the rear seat (mine is not a split one) and whilst the lower seat comes out fine, and the two torx bolts come out easily, the seat still won't budge upwards
    • Or if you do not need to remove the rear seat, how do you get the parcel shelf up (which is what I presume I have to do?)
Any ideas/info very welcome! Oh and as an afterthought, I presume with the front speakers you have to remove the door panel? merely removing the grills to get at the speakers will be a pointless exercise?

    Best wishes

    Jonathan

    Hi,
I have the similar problem. I have asked 3 different forums now, without success. I got this solution, but I haven't managed to get this to work:

TrimsRemoving and installing rear side trim

    Side trim

Remove rear seat bench and backrest split
Unclip side trim -1- from rear, starting at top.
Pull side trim -1- out of sill panel on inside.
    Unplug connectors.
When fitting, first enter side trim -1- into sill panel on inside.

    ---

I get this breaking sound when I try to do this, I have also used power, without success...

So if you have a solution for this, please contact me asap, because I'm must do this quickly.

    Thanks

To take out the A4 rear speakers do the following;-

    1) Tilt the seat bench forwards to remove
    2) Undo two torx screws at base of seat back
    3) Remove headrests
    4) Remove support tubes for headrests (4 in total) - these lever out with careful use of a wide screwdriver
    5) Lift backrest up and out - 3 metal clips on boot side that have to be wriggled through - get a willing assistant to lie in the boot.

Now you have the seat out its time to remove the parcel shelf as follows;-

    1) unclip surround for high level brake light - this pulls back (towards front of car) and up.

    2) undo wiring clip to high level brake light.

    3) remove brake light bulb holder unit.

    4) Get in boot and push up the 2 white plastic clips near the speaker mounts (1 either side) that hold the parcel shelf in place

    5) Parcel shelf should now be 'free' and able to slide forward on the seatbelts.

You now have access to the speakers (bloody German engineering!).

    Good luck
    A4Chris

As the rear speakers are not a standard size, you can buy adapter rings to fit normal jobbies.

The standard speakers have freaky equalisation to make them sound ok (Bose is even worse), and very low Ohm rating.

Might be better to do away with the standard stereo setup and get a new head unit.

    Hi.

    I have had this problem too and have a simple(r) solution. I have a 2000 (W reg) A4.

Without removing seats or anything too drastic, it is possible to remove the parcel shelf.

    1. 1st open the boot and in the centre of the boot as you look up in the boot is a connector which you have to unclip.
    2. Go back into the back of the car and the parcel shelf is held down by 3 clips located near the top of the back seats.
    3. simply pull the parcel shelf up firmly. you should hear a pop as the clips come apart.
The parcel shelf the slides over the headrests with the seat belts still going through where they are postioned.

    This worked for me.

    I hope this helps someone.
