My clutch pedal started clicking this morning car is a 2008 mk5 golf tdi and the click happens at the very top of the pedal when you first start to push on the pedal you can feel it had a quick look under there but can see much any ideas?

Sounds like the clutch master cylinder is failing.

I wouldn't doubt Crasher's response as he really knows his stuff but I know Mk4 Golfs sometimes have a problem with the bracket on the clutch pedal that the actuator rod goes into; the weld breaking so the actuator rod end can move around and eventually come out or push through completely. Not sure if the Mk5 is the same but might be worth a closer look because if the bracket weld is failing, you may well get a 'clicking' sensation.

Just doing an S5 with a similar problem, it is also preventing the starter lockout from functioning correctly. Evil job to change.
