Hi looking to do an engine swap on my 2001 passat 2.5 V6 TDi, was thinking of getting the bigger Audi 3.0 TDi anyone know if this would be a simple replacement or would it require a lot work to make fit with new mounts etc. Thanks for any help

    hi, welcome to the forum.
now, if you want a 3 litre, buy a 3 litre already fitted to the car from the factory. if your 2.5 is blown, find another 2.5 and fit that. it probably can be done but i doubt easy would be a word that goes with it, like so many engine swops on modern cars. presuming everything did bolt straight up, like engine mounts and bellhousing, you still have the electronics nightmare to contend with.
yes, years ago you could drop almost any engine into any car. rover v8's have found there way into most things. just a bit of welding and fabrication. bolt a big carb on top and off you go. now however, if you can't fit all the right electrical bits, the car probably won't run, and that could include all of the wiring, ecu's, dash etc out of the donor car.

The world has a load of these half done conversions lying around. I agree with zollaf you'd need to buy a complete car and replace pretty much everything from the dash forwards, wiring, ecu, suspension add engine and box etc and you have a heap of work with mounts etc and it may not work properly anyway. Want an extra 40 bhp? get it remapped

As Zollaf mentioned above, don't bother. Just get yourself a gtb2260vk from the 3.0 tdi 244Bhp engine, a set of bosio race 683 nozzles and a custom remap- best way to get 250-300 bhp out of your 2.5 tdi ! Here's mine, ran 266 Bhp on the dyno with a worn engine, dodgy turbo dynamics hybrid charger and not balanced race nozzles:

They dont do a 3.0ltr TDi in my model passat, maybe on the newer ones but tbh dont like the look of them, I was expecting the engine gearbox wiring loom to be a bit of a job, by easy wasnt meaning a 2 hr job but simply does it fit with relative ease into the engine bay, looks a bit tight as it is but if they can get a 3.2 in a golf surely it muct fit ok. Cheers for reply though.

Cheers summit to keep in mind, was happy enough with my engine but heard some rumours the 2.5 v6 isnt too good an engine, has several faults and thought be summit differnt to have a more modern engine out an audi or even vw in it for reliability, Im guessing the turbo off a 3.0ltr bolts straight in then? cheers

ok, be interesting if anyone had done it before though, see what trouble they had, Not sure if Im just not used to having a diesel again after my scooby but think mines is buring oil, only had it a week an a half, done an oil and filter change so not able to tell yet if oils dropping but my eyes sting really bad and kinda smeels like its burning oil a bit, there is no real smoke issue from exhaust, get the old puff of black when accelerating nothing abnormal and when I rev it staionary theres no smoke cloud either, any ideas as to what it might be??? its almost on 150,000miles has full vw service history and new belts. wanna make sure its worthwhile keeping before spending anything on it, well engine at least the rest of cars sound. cheers

The electronic issues would be the worst part, especially the immobiliser which would have to be deleted. It simply is no worth the trouble, long gone are the days when a 1.3 Tina could be backed onto the drive of a Friday evening and emerge as a 2.0 Monday morning, it is not that simple any more.
