The holder twists clockwise to lock - no clips are fitted. Hope this helps.

I've tried that, it says in the manual (yes I had to resort to it!) to line the holder up at 4 and 10 o'clock and twist until the holder is horizontal.

I tried for a good 30 minutes and couldn't get it to lock in. Access is limited as you well know.

I had to replace a complete lamp assembly a few months ago, so still have the old one to hand - Align the black clip with the 2 & 8 o'clock & then twist until holder is horizontal. I agree that access is tight, so good luck.

Armed with Sepecat's advice and a printout from Elsa via my local VAG specialist I managed (finally!) to get the bulb back in.

Wheel off, upper arch off, lined the tabs up and twisted them and presto, bulb back in!

    Thanks again

Any further info on this please? I cannot get the bloody thing back in place...my hands are shredded and my patience is rapidly going the same way! Passenger side I'm talking about...then i need to do the driver side. Just no room to get my hand/s in!
