Hey, Ive just made the plunge for a 54 Plate Golf 1.9 TDI MK5, after my 06 Corsa was written off (Utterly not my fault, Crazy woman lost control coming round a corner in wet conditions.... Stupid bitch was late for work)

Anyway back on topic Ive researched alot into golfs and found that my golf is long due a cambelt change. Never had one according to its service history and its at 68000 miles.

Also for this 54 Plate Golf 1.9 TDI MK5 with 68k on the clock, was £3600 a good price? Back passenger doors seems to sag down (Needs realigning) and new mirror cover? I think it was but share your opinions.

Where is the best place for me to get a cambelt in nottingham? Ive also heard its best to get a water pump change at the same time? Unless ive missed anything majorly essential?

    Cheers and give me responses

Ah great, they are not open at this time. But does anyone know how much they would quote me roughly for the cambelt and water pump? or whats the going price?

Also if i might need anything else changing? Just don't want to be duped over by the price

crasher probably isn't the cheapest for a timing belt, but he certainly won't be duping you into paying more than you need to and the job will be done properly and by the book, which a scruffy back street garage won't necessarily do, but will possibly be a bit cheaper, but it depends whether you want the job to last until its next due, or let you down at the most inconvenient moment because they didn't replace the tensioner and end up costing you a load more money that you shouldn't have had to find.
the choice is yours, but if you call crashers place tomorrow then you will find out, unless of course he see's this thread and can give you an answer tonight.

You mention tensioners, Is this within the cambelt kit or at extra cost and could anyone shed any light on warranties? What happens if the cambelt snaps within 6months or a year?

Hopefully he will see this thread and give me price, that would just be great

well, you want a complete kit with tensioner, pulley or pulleys, any bolts that are recommended, new engine mount bolts, water pump and new antifreeze. most places don't replace the engine mount bolts, but they are stretch bolts and need to be replaced. if they snap the engine drops and threads rip out the block. crasher will replace the bolts. the warranty is usually 12 months but a belt won't snap unless its incorrectly fitted unless you do happen to get the 1:1000000 rogue faulty one.
again, you want a garage that will honour a warranty and not just tell you to do one, as the remedial work is very costly, which again is a good reason to use a garage that knows what they are doing.
as i said, you could save £50 now getting the job done, but that saving could cost you 20 times more just before christmas next year.

Apologies, didn't mean to mislead on the price aspect of your question. I just fired off that post on my way out. I just advised about Crasher as he has thousands of posts (click on his name to see his previous posts) and is regarded extremely highly on here. There are a few select members of the forum who are regarded as experts thst we're lucky to have on here. Crasher is definitely one & Zollaf would be another, I just wish I had one of them on my doorstep like you have.

    Anyway, enough brown nosing.

Aye i understand where all of you are coming from and learning of this new mechanic genius is a god send. But if it costs an arm and a leg more than other mechanics, then surely its better to go to VW them selves?

Ill just have to wait for the qoute from crasher, Hopefully its reasonable. My lowesr qoute so far is £305 for water pump and cam belt.

Also going based on what i paid for the car in the first post and its issues. Was it a good buy?

He'll be cheaper than VW but slightly dearer than other mechanics but you pay extra for years of experience.

Seems a good price for the year and mileage - Steve could also realign the door and he will probably give you forum discount.
