Report on two months with 2006 3.0TDI Avant S Line quattro

I purchased my first Audi two months ago. In that time I have covered just over 2k miles on a mixture of roads and uses; commuting, long motorway/A road trips and a long weekend holiday 'tour'. I would like to share my views and impressions of that time.

Firstly, some background; I have been a long time admirer of the A6, including the previous model. However, having for the past several years being owned by several (up to nine) dogs, even the Avant did not have enough space for them. Now down to 'only' five dogs, and being in a position both to afford and run what I wanted (a 3.0TDI quattro) I started looking. After viewing several cars in my price range I found one that I subsequently purchased 120 miles from home.

Viewing: I found most VAG dealer cars were pricey comparing spec and mileage with general dealers. Reading some of the comments on here gave me some idea of what to look for. All I viewed had a full history (essential) but lacked 'something' to make me reach for the plastic. Finally one came up.

My Audi is a 2006 (2007 model) A6 3.0TDI Avant S line quattro (233), first registered September 2006 (Built August 2006). It had 42500 miles, full Audi history, being a dealer and one owner car and had a great specification. Options include: Tiptronic gearbox, Avus silver pearl effect paint (a S line only colour), 19" multi spoke wheels (255/35 tyres), Exclusive line interior (see comments below), Advance Key, DVD sat nav/MMI high, electric seats/seat heating, Bose Surround Sound system, electric hatch, ft/rr parking sensors, Interior light package, privacy glass, folding mirrors and xenon/led lights.

The interior is in the smooth Valcona leather, two tone (black and silver) with silver stitching. This is also on the steering wheel (a four spoke on an S Line; part of the Exclusive line) and gear gaiter, with silver leather inserts to the doors. The Advance Key is more useful than I imagined; as per the handbook, when stopping at lights/level crossings for any time put in neutral and press 'Stop'; press 'Start' and drop into D to go. Supposed to save fuel !. Seriously not having to fumble for even a remote key to unlock and start has become a boon. The electric hatch is ideal with the dogs. I can open the hatch before they try jumping in and scratch the door with their claws.

Running: The car was due a Service on purchase, but as the garage I bought it from wanted to do it in their workshop ( not VAG specialist) I talked them into not doing it. I subsequently had a local specialist carry this out. they also found that two faults had been logged but not cleared, two failed glowplugs and No. 2 bank intake manifold. I had these fixed at the same time and negotiated a Revo remap into the price !. I am still 'discussing' the two faults with the supplying garage as they gave a three month warranty on the mechanicals (although consumer law would give me the 'right' if this was not offered).

I have commented elsewhere on here about the remap, suffice to say that it transformed a fairly quick diesel estate into (in my view) a supercar. The fact that as an S Line it has lower, firmer suspension has not been the problem for ride comfort I anticipated. The wife has only commented on how comfortable the car is on long journeys and that is compared to our previous French people carrier. I simply love the way this car just goes whenever I want it to, no longer dropping to S to overtake or getaway from the lights, I use the paddles at times to hold a gear in some situations or give some engine braking. But generally just stick it in D and 'awahay' we go !.

Very nice car - I love the white/black leather

Good job .. I'll have my 2008 A6 4 years in April 2013 and it seem's like its been 4 days let alone 4 years!

As stated above, the leather is black and silver, not white (although the pix don't show this well). I think white might have been a bit too.......white !.
