I have a similar problem and have just bought a hazard switch and when I put it in it makes more noise than the old one did, my problem is when I cancel the indicator the relay carries on ticking for a bit longer then stops. I have taken out the unit underneath the carpet and the problems is still the same. There is a thread somewhere that has some good pictures of getting the relay out, it is what I used but the wire into the back of it is so short, you have to stretch it a bit with some clever use of flat screwdrivers to hold it in place when you plug it back in. I may aswell sell you the new one I bought if you are interested, as it did not cure my problem.

reading into some past threads apparently the stalk is the cause of this and it needs a good clean and spray with lube. will be doing this tomorrow.
