I know there are threads on here about gearbox noises when the clutch is depressed but I'm getting a rattling noise coming from the end of the gearbox that stops when the clutch is depressed. I think the rattle coincided with the replacement of the push rod (non OEM part)and pressure plate (long story but the clutch failed (clutch did not disengage when clutch pedal pressed) and after removing gearbox, examing clutch (nothing wrong) decided that it might be worth while replacing the rod and plate in case they had worn. Eventualy located fault to split actuating finger which could have been replaced very easily with the gearbox still on the car!!!! You live and learn! Anyway not wanting to remove the gearbox again has anyone any thoughts on waht the problem might be? My initial thoughts are that it may be the non OEM pushrod that is either too short or of a thinner diameter that is rattling when pressure is taken off it. Would it be possible to pack this out with grease and add a shim to the thrust bearing to take up any free play that there might be? Any advice or guidance would be appreciated (I seem to have mislaid the original push rod but I'll keep looking as this is an obvious first step).
    Cheers

Did you check the release bearing and idler bearings? It's very hard without hearing it. Is it a DMF?

    Hi

    Hi
Will do once I'm sure this is what it is but at £30 plus VAT I'd like to be a bit more certain before I change parts just for the sake of it!
    Cheers

Wait until a few of the members have listened to it but it's more grinding than rattling to me and it's the classic test of a release bearing.

The rattle/grinding is only there when the clutch pedal is released, when the clutch pedal is pressed the noise goes away! I would have thought if it was the release bearing it would be the other way around?
    Any thoughts?

Hi the gearbox engine combo is a 1.6 8 valve with a DUU gearbox (replaced 18 months ago with a reconned model due to a sheared rivet in the old gearbox). The clutch is not the usual configuration found on most cars so is probably the back to front flywheel. The noise only seems to appear once the clutch has reached biting point either in or out of gear so it looks like it only occurs when the main gear shaft is rotating. As the noise is coming from the rear of the gearbox I think it may be some bearing at the rear of the gearbox that may be giving out. Any thoughts?
As a matter of course I'll be contacting the supplier of the gearbox for a warranty repair if it's possible. Just waiting for him to reply, let you know what happens.
