    Hello All,

My VW Golf has developed this embarrassing continuous jerking cough when I turn it off for about close to a minute before it finally sort of rattles and shuts down. Could it be the spark plugs?

I have attempted to find some thing in the Haynes manual but I don't know what I could be looking at.

Please could someone tell me what I could check, replace or lubricate to alleviate this annoying issue. I always use very good oil (castrol magnetec) and regularly check the water etc.

Your help and experience is appreciated.

    Ben

Something is causing it to "run on" Send me your engine code. Find the main ignition fuse get the engine up to normal temperature then with the engine running pull the fuse.

IT's most likely running too rich. Ours did it (very embarressing) and required a reconditioned carb, as there were many other things wrong with it too. Is it the standard Pierburg 2E2 (automatic choke) or Weber replacement? (manual choke)

What are the revs doing before you try to switch off?
