    Hi All

    I have a 2004 Passat Sport 130Tdi, 104k miles.
I have thought it was a bit thirsty for a while but put it down to the extra power and coming from a 90bhp A4, also when the Mrs drives it the mpg takes a dive.
I have just done an actual MPG test and I do not think it can be right. If anyone can advise I would be grateful.

Mixed driving approx 80 miles dual carriage way (70mph tops) the rest around town driving. Over 1 week (fuel light to fuel light). Temp needle always hits 90.

    £1.42 per litre x 4.54 = £6.44 per gallon

    £25.00 / £6.44 = 3.88 gallons

    133 miles / 3.88 gallons = 34MPG ?!?!?!

Any suggestions appreciated as I do not think this can be right.

    Thanks

    Warren

The problem is that it's not many miles to do an average over. If you're doing 133 miles a week with 80 miles on dual carriageway then you're only doing 16 miles a day (or two 8 mile trips) on dual carriageway which isn't much to get decent fuel consumption over. Plus if after 133 miles you filled up just a bit more than you had previously done then that can give you poor apparent economy as you'd actually used a bit less fuel than you put (back) in.

I'd suggest firstly to try it over a full tank at least (or as many miles as you can get from one) and to properly test the economy try it over a decent distance at a constant speed.

Thanks for the reply 996jimbo, I'll give that a try next time I put fuel in and monitor it over a full tank.

I know they are not ideal conditions to get good mpg out of a diesel but I hope to get closer to 40mpg.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Woz..

I Put 18 litres in a week approx £25.50 at the mo and thats somewhere near 4 gallons and i get 180 miles out of that all the time..

That basically covers me for the week.. every week ...

    I'm just tootally around town..

4 Miles to work and back and the usaual shopping trips and kids things..

Anything less than 40 mpg and its not good..

Can't count for driving style but i got a feeling you are not a boy racer

Your status does not say where you are but someone local might be able to hook you up for a scan..

I assume its had a service recently

    Hi PCDoctor,

Thanks for the reply. My average week sounds very similar to yours, and I would accept the mileage you are getting to be honest.

No I'm not a boy racer, couldn't afford to be now days . I just drive at a steady pace, the odd blip for overtaking but that's about it. If I went any faster my Mrs would push her foot through the floor on her imaginary brake pedal

I went down to RAF Cosford a couple of weeks ago with my son and my dad in the car so no more than 70mph and in sixth most of the time, and only got about 150ish miles to £25.00. I live in Wrexham so its was the A5/M54 most of the way down. My old smoker 90bhp AHU engine A4 would have got a lot more than that.

I have bought a VAG.com lead off of eBay but struggling to get it to communicate with the car, that's what I am trying to do at the moment to see if everything is running as it should be. Something has got to be faulty somewhere for me to be getting these readings.

It also had a full service less than 2k ago oil, air & fuel filters.

I will have to get this VAG.com lead to work.

    Cheers

Some of those cheap leads can cause severe damage burnt wires etc, there's sure to be someone near you with the genuine article that will scan you for next to nothing. Hopefully you paid for your lead using paypal so you can return it for refund!

I spent ages trying to get the (cheap ebay) Vag Com lead to speak to the car - the issue for me was giving it the right COM port number. It has to be number 3 but every time you start it the computer automatically gives it the next available number. Once you sort out the right COM port number you will hopefully find it works OK.

If you are ever up in North North Wales, I can scan the car for you. Never done the whole measuring blocks thing but I can certainly do an auto scan.
