I saw this Audi 80 quattro Avant B4 | North Yorkshire | Gumtree for sale earlier - if you're interested I could have a look. Even drive it down if you bought it.

late 80 box, first did 310k miles and 5th gear syncro went. next box was the same and did the same at approx 185 k miles. this box came from a spares car and lasted about 2 weeks. 3rd box is unknown miles but came from a slightly earlier car so is marginally lower geared and so far so good. it does make the car fly though, can just keep up with a neighbours fabia vrs thats nicely tweaked. my car is not quite standard though.

So is it the case that A4 boxes are stronger and early ones fit straight in, with a moved mount (same casing apparently) and shimmed bellhousing bolt?

Are the quattro boxes similarly weak too? Might know someone who would have that - for £500 it would be decent value if you're not doing 20k a year.

I'd forgotten how good these machines were - my Dad had a 2.3 coupe years ago, I had a Passat with the inline engine waaaay back which with decent dampers went very well. I pushed this one on back roads on the way back from buying it and managed to shaft the box. Anything more modern has more restricted suspension travel so crashes about on bumpy lanes, so reducing your speed. This car hoovered them up like they were trunk roads.

i have never tried an a4 box in one but the engines are the sameish so no reason for the box not to fit ? they are great cars. i think the later tdi box was the only weak one and the others are good for like 700 bhp.
