mine has a bit more poke i think on veg, which isn't unusual. if forms a better seal with the high pressure pump inside the injector pump, so theoretically can inject more fuel and certainly compensates for a worn pump. it also overcomes the lubrication problems that low sulphur diesel gives. the sulphur is the lube. mpg remains about the same, although i need to run a few more tankfuls to confirm this, but 46 seems about right.
i get wvo thats filtered and has kerosene added at 5% to thin it down. (you can use chemicals as fuel additives and get away with it) for 60p a litre. so that means i am doing 108 mpg at 142ppl for dino. beat that !!!

WOW 46MPG at 60p is brilliant
Do you have to convert much on your car to run WVO?

the kit comprises : bigger fuel pipe, then a coolant heated heat exchanger to get the veg oil hot, a different filter with an electric heater band, a higher pressure valve on the return pipe on the injector pump, modified injectors and then 2 resistors to trick the ecu into thinking the car is colder when you start. both resistors are used whilst cranking then one switches off as soon as it starts and the other switches off when its upto running temp.

Bigger fuel pipe – were does this go?
Coolant heated heat exchanger – I think you gave link to one of these on Ebay? HEAT EXCHANGER biofuel veg vegetable cooking oil SVO | eBay
Different filter with an electric heater band – I have seen Fuel filter bands
A higher pressure valve on the return pipe on the injector pump – Where do I get one of these from and were exactly does it fit?
Modified injectors – Why will it not be ok on normal ones? (Injectors are expensive)?
Then 2 resistors to trick the ecu into thinking the car is colder when you start. Both resistors are used whilst cranking then one switches off as soon as it starts and the other switches off when it’s up to running temp – Where do I get these from and where do it fit them?

Tank to heat exchanger. Not totally necessary unless you're running very high %s of veg in cold temps. More important on engines which consume more fuel - I've doubledup the fuel lines on my 2.5TDi and run them inside the car to prevent cooling the return too much in cold weather.
Coolant heated heat exchanger – I think you gave link to one of these on Ebay?
I've used old combi boiler heat exchangers, but ebay item no. 261276863902 is simpler to pipe up
Different filter with an electric heater band – I have seen Fuel filter bands
You'll never put much heat into oil with a 12v supply - use the heat of the engine. The IP warms the oil before it's injected once up to temp, use a heat exchanger as above to warm the fuel prior to filtering
A higher pressure valve on the return pipe on the injector pump – Where do I get one of these from and were exactly does it fit?
Not a huge difference, I've not used one for years
Modified injectors – Why will it not be ok on normal ones? (Injectors are expensive)?
Elsbett know what they're doing, but sort out other things first before splashing out. Lots of people run TDis single tanked on standard injectors, without probs
Then 2 resistors to trick the ecu into thinking the car is colder when you start. Both resistors are used whilst cranking then one switches off as soon as it starts and the other switches off when it’s up to running temp – Where do I get these from and where do it fit them?
Fit a switch in the coolant temp sender wire, isolating this makes the ECU think it's minimum temp. Pull it off to temporarily replicate the mod

I wouldn't recommend using ANY kerosene as motor vehicle fuel, it is not allowed by HMRC. Let alone advertise the fact on a public forum - the powers that be have been known to turn up, unannounced, to a forum poster's home address and take samples. I understand the allowances for additives, but read the vegetableoildiesel.co.uk forum for more knowledge.

What matters most is the quality of the oil and the condition of the engine - fuel must be perfectly dry and polished to 1 micron, ideally. Mine is filtered through a couple of half micron filters to polish - it makes a noticeable difference to performance and economy. Rapeseed oil is the choice, avoid the GM Soya if you can. I started by adding my wvo at 50% and upping the % - 80% is fine in winter with a fphe, 70% if none, and 90% no bother in summer. I always add 1% petrol and increase this proportionally under 12C, to around 5% at OC. Diesel makes up the rest, without it economy and performance suffers.
Engine compression must be within tolerance and the injectors and glowplugs in tip-top condition. A cylinder with low compression will likely cause engine failure on veg oil, no matter how many fancy add-ons you have attached to the engine. Diesel which reaches the sump is burnt off and doesn't gum up piston rings.

Cold starts with direct injection are always the worry - trying to heat the oil with 12v electrics is on a hiding to nothing when you're injecting into a cold lump of steel and alloy. Starting and stopping on diesel or biodiesel isn't really the complete answer - idling for any period on veg can cause problems. But there are loads of people who with a healthy engine and well-filtered and dried fuel simply tip it in and drive - and have done for tens of thousands of miles on these engines, without any problem. The few who have come to grief have generally lived and driven in very built-up areas and/or have compression problems.

Air leaks on more viscous fuel can come from the filter thermovalve - many ditch the VW design altogether and use a Discovery 300TDi head with the Bosch fitting. Otherwise, driving the engine hard on a regular basis is probably the best way of avoiding problems.

I've been running these engines on 90% wvo continuously since the 2500 litre limit came in - many years ago. No problems yet, but I am considering having a set of Elsbett injectors made up.

Thanks, I've got his number somewhere. What was the cost? And what was the biggest difference? Does he lower the opening pressure and does it require any reprogramming of the ECU?

i don't know what he does, he was very secretive about that bit nothing done to the ecu to run them. elsbett machine them so they sink deeper into the head. can't really say i noticed any difference really. they needed rebuilding anyway and were done together with the pump several years ago for my customer that then owned the 80.

Flippin' eck, 85p/litre for waste veg oil? I'll bring you some down next time I'm in your part of the world if you want - with 5-10% misfuel added. It's a good bit less than that. Perhaps if I could persuade the 80 to drive to you with a supply in the back you'd save me the job of fitting the A4 gearbox?
