You'll probably get more help posting this in the A4 B6 forum. i expect Esh may be along shortly to move this thread for you.

Have you looked underneath the car yet? If it's thumping on acceleration / deceleration, I'd suspect that one or more of the suspension joints or mountings is loose / worn.

I think the first piece of necessary work is either to jack it up and check all the suspension mounts and joints, or get a mechanic to check this for you.

You could also check the gearbox mounts - is the gear stick moving at the same time as the banging?

Did you every get to the bottom of this?

I had a similar clunking noise when I dipped the clutch whilst changing up and I thought there was a gearbox or clutch problem. I eventually worked out that it was due to the nose dipping down when the accelerator was released for a gear change as I could make it do the same without dipping the clutch and simply releasing the accelerator. It only happened in the lower gears, when the nose-dipping forward would be more pronounced.

A local trustworthy garage had the car for an entire morning and they checked all sorts but couldn't find the problem. They assured me that nothing dangerous was present but that I would need to simply carry on, allow the noise to develop and bring it back.

It did seem to be getting worse and localising more and more on the left front wheel. So one day I simply took the wheel off to have a look myself. Nothing abnormal that I could see.

But after putting the wheel back on, the noise has completely disappeared. With hindsight, the noise only started after my wheels were taken off to have my dirty, noisy front brakes stripped and cleaned.

So perhaps the wheels weren't re-torqued in the correct manner? Whatever - the noise has gone now..

May be nothing at all to do with your problem but both I and the garage didn't even think of the wheel as being the problem, so I thought I'd add my tuppence worth...
