Hot leather means hot bum

Hi

In need of much advce.
Air con on my 98 passat 1.9 tdi (afn) has never been great since the day i bought it. On the off chance has the system checked, regassed and rechecked. All was cool until the engine was stopped and a high pitched whistle sounded from around the compressor and now have very little air cooling effect. The garage which performed all the checks say that there are no leaks and was gassed up, then taken back out, then regassed with0.600kg of refrigerant. From what I gather this is going to end up pretty expensive. Possibly needing a new compressor and new dryer with another regas. Could someone please please please point me in the right direction of what to do and where to go in the East midlands.

I am not good with air con but i would of thought that someone good with
air con should be able to tell you if it's the compressor or drier and not just have a guess at both.
I would just get a second hand compressor throw it on re-gas it and see what happens.
But i would try and nail him to one component then if you re-gas
and it doesn't work he might re-gas a second time for free............
