    Hello all,

My 2004 2.5 TDI Cab has been with an Audi Garage for about a week for diagnosis, due to engine knocking.

The initial diagnosis was Cam Belt Tensioner failure. Quoted about 1k for various belts and pulleys and water pump and cam belt. Then got a call and said they needed extra for cam belt seal. Now further investigation, and damage to locating sleeve in the head. So needs new head. So in a nutshell the engine is US
My question is should i consider trying to locate a second hand lump? I cant afford another 1.7k which they are quoting for a replacement head, I have a meeting with them tomorrow probably to discuss the situation, and their charges so far.

Any comments from 'Those in the Know' would be greatly appreciated

    regards

    dave

Sale of goods act all the way, goods and SERVICES must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. Seems like their preliminary fault finding/diagnostic was flawed.

a main dealer will only offer you a 'proper' repair in their eyes, which in this case is clearly a new head. You may well find that it is possible to weld and remachine the damaged head for a fraction of the cost for example? A main dealer would never offer this option, even though it may be viable way to do it? Maybe find a motor engineer for an opinion. Also how did the damage occur, is it wear associated with something else failing? Is it something that may have been caused by human error?
Is there a recall in place for this problem? will Audi contribute?

If all else fails you could try breakerlink or find-a-part type sites to source an engine or maybe a head?

Do you have pictures of the damage to the head ? Late BDG engines had issues with the camshaft bearing rings coming off the cam thus the rollers fail and it drops a valve. I have repaired a few of these with that sort of issues. You can source a 2nd hand head and get a new, solid camshaft kit off ebay- not cheap but better value for money compared with the dealer/genuine parts...

IMG_1708.jpgIMG_1708.jpgthis is the pic of the damaged head. i dont know if the missing ring is the bearing ring? it looked like a surclip that was part of the actual head, the engineer says that if head was replaced it would still not be known until the engine was run if any valve damage had occurred.
i will approach Audi on a recall issue,( dont know if you dont ask) I am thinking that even a second hand head once fitted, I would still be sweating on valve damage??
    any thoughts anyone?
thanking all for input so far
    regards
