    Laptimer.jpg

So I ordered the VCDS cable from ilexa - nice people - and it came next day - armed with my MFGF print out I enabled needle sweep and laptimer. Needle sweep is cool, and I found the laptimer in the onboard computer list - the one that goes 'Onboard computer, Efficiency Programe, Digital Speedometer, Cruise Control, Display darkened' when you press the little menu button on the steering wheel on the computer tab.

Wow, laptimer is really cool, as you can see from the pic:

    1. You get a 'Boost' gauge which can't really be seen as small bars rise up from next to the 5 on the rev gauge up to the word Boost as you bring on the power and I was sat on the drive.
    2. You get a digital speed readout
    3. You get oil temperature
    4. You get the laptimer which you press OK to start then OK again to start the next lap when you cross start/finish line. You can see all the lap times and reset when you stop and scroll with the wheel - took me a couple of minutes to work that out.

    But then also:

    1. In the head up display you get oil temperature
    2. In the head up display you get the Gear Indicator - so the D1-8 or M1-8, although it did say D when I was in E, but I'll forgive that.

    AND:

When you pull the paddles to go Manual, just under the digital speed reading and above the Lap 7 in my pic, you get a gear change indicator which is a series of bars that start to light up as you pass about 4200 revs, obviously I have no picture of that as all hell was breaking loose as we sped down the road.

I'm majorly impressed with this, so much fun, although as you can see I'm only just approaching 400 miles so still taking it steady for the most part.

I think the S7 has needle sweep engaged, but there is no mention of the laptimer in my A7/S7 handbook, so maybe it's reserved for an RS model????

All in all, you need this in your life, trust me.

    Jon

That sounds fantastic, I'm tempted to buy the cable myself. Forgive me for asking a noob question but do you get any flak from Audi when you take your car in for service and they see that you have changed the software behaviour of the car?

Well, my dealer was keen to see what could be done, I think it would be a massive faux pas for them to get touchy, especially with forums like this around. It's so easy to change you can put it back anyway, it's only a check box. Also, if my ABS unit fails in the first 3 years, they would have a lot of trouble moaning about a laptimer!

Thanks jbanfie, I'm now sorely tempted to buy the cable, must resist, must resist.... Damn, I have just realised that you have a A7 / S7, not an A6, so I can't get this anyway, shame.

Oh!!!! Oh!!!! I enabled Lap Timer on mine, and couldn't see any options to get into it. I thought it was a redundant feature! I'm off out to the car with my laptop to turn it back on and take another look...

So... Everyone knows I'm a muppet. Some even say I look like one. I have to admit to being stumped by this one, though (which, let's be honest, doesn't take much when you are a muppet)

I checked in VCDS - 17 Instruments - Coding - Long Coding Helper - Byte 1 - and the "Enable lap timer" checkbox was already checked (from when I did the mods last time).

When I check the options available in the DIS, this is what I see...

When I scroll down to Page 2, I see this...

Now, unless I'm missing something, I don't have an option for Lap Timer

I'm not upset. Nope. Not at all. Not even a little. These are not tears, they are, er, hayfever. Honest.

<sounds of stomping and wailing as he goes into the corner to have a tantrum>

That's a nightmare, because my display is the same, except page 2 gets two lines, the first being Lap Timer and the second Display darkened.

You must feel pretty bad, because it's a great feature.

What's also interesting is that although the engine water temp on the gauge warms up quite quickly, the oil temp takes a while to catch up. I don't know what optimum oil temperature is, but after climbing a hill at 50mph it got to 100 degrees C before settling back to mid 90's. It's something I'm going to keep an eye on, but I think I'll be doing my engine and turbo's a favour by waiting till the oil is up to temp before asking too much of them.

I'm really pleased at least some people get this feature! My last car had lap timer, and I miss being able to see the oil temp. Oh well.

I was looking again at the picture of your dashboard. Your redline is configured a little higher than mine! Mine sometimes starts one block below 5000 rpm but never goes above.

    Interesting!!
