I mean the system fitted to all the cars in SE spec and above- the one with the thermometer in the little dot between the AC/Econ, Recirc, and rear demister buttons. My mum has a 2004 SE, and the temperature control doesn't feel like it's connected using a bowden cable like the direction control is, or both of them are in my Polo (which has no aircon). In the Polo, when you turn the dial from full hot to full cold, you can hear the flap move even if the ignition is off. The Golf doesn't do anything when you turn the temperature control to full cold.

I was under the impression that the Golf had one of 3 options for the heater/climate controls. The basic cars with no cooling had just the old-school 3 dials (temp, fan, direction) with recirculation and rear demister buttons. Then there was the 'Climatic' aircon system, which has the temperature sensor dot, the Econ/AC button, and temperatures written on the heater dial, and there's the climate control (which is completely different). I've always thought that the Climatic system used a motor and a flap to adjust air temperature, because it doesn't depend solely on the angle of the dial, but on the temperature of the cabin and the outside air. And don't those motors die and get stuck?
    2002 Polo 9n 1.2 65PS. Basic but it's better than the train!

Thanks for the replies folks, may be getting somewhere if we can establish there is definitely no cable.
I cannot find a data sicker with one of those 9** combinations on. I've looked on door pillars, under bonnet and user manual. Do you know where its located?
My Golf is the 1.9TDI Match version, and it does have air con. It also has the little black dot in the middle of the AC, recirculation and demister buttons VC-10 described above. The temperature dial also has the temperatures written next to it....
What I still find strange is that there appears to be an apparent 'socket' to the back of the dial which appears as though its for a cable as per the control dial to choose the air vents.... Unless this is a standard dial fitted to all models?

If it has AC the temp is controlled by a motor, the control panel has fittings for the non AC version so you definitely do not have a cable missing. You need it fault code reading and some check in output tests on the diagnostic computer plus basic settings when the new motor has been fitted.

I was hoping it wouldn't come down to a trip to the garage but looks like there's no other way.
Thanks for your help, hopefully a new motor wont be too pricey as I was hoping to sell it soon.

£90 for the motor, VW say half an hour to change which I find highly optimistic.
