    Hi there,

Been lurking a while but now finally in a position to buy and been searching for a few weeks now for a good Avant Special Edition.

Anyways I have my eye on 2 of the same year (07) and 1 is the petrol model and the other is diesel.

I was leaning towards the diesel mainly down to MPG and almost put a deposit down yesterday until I started researching the car more and was shocked to see so many oil balancer shaft issues.

It's already had the injectors changed due to the known issue with them but is the oil balancer shaft issue really a question of when rather than if?

If it is that common and a certainty to fail why are so many owners out there sticking with them?

So is this a no brainer and the petrol should be the only model to go for?

Well injectors is a recall on 2.0 diesels and yes balance shaft has ruined some engines.TFSI is better economy though over normal petrol engines as they increased the rail pressure. When it comes to a balance shaft falure all your money saved on fuel will go into repairs in the best case or even more if the engine needs replacing so hard to suggest.1.9tdi is what I stick to.

    depends on your mileage.
    higher mileage....look towards diesel.
    lower mileage....consider the petrol.

audi petrol engines aren't the most economic around. my 2.0tfsi gets worse economy than my BMW 3.0Z4 used to get. Similar power output so I know the Audi engine is more highly tuned.

I've had my 2006 Tfsi for almost 3 years. Spent hardly anything on repairs, passed last couple of MOTs without any work needing done and so far it's been a great car for me. I'd recommend one...especially a quattro if you get snow where you live. Quattro uses a bit more fuel in day to day use but come winter you just love it....even on normal tyres.

I have the version with black optics and these have the BRD version of the 170PD engine which I believe is not one of those affected by the balancer shaft issue.

Nevertheless, after scaring myself reading all the posts I decided that after living a year out of warranty on goodwill, I ought to cover myself with a good warranty from the end of year 4.

I'm pleased to report that over a year on I've had no cause to claim for anythingwith Audi volunteering the injector replacement that applied to these engines.

My MPG improved from under 40 to between 40-44 so I'm happy with the car and the outcome. The engine characteristics are a bit quirky particularly at low revs, but this is something you get used to and otherwise they,re rewarding especially with the reassurance of quattro like mine has.

    Cheers for the replies guys.
i was under the impression all the PD engines had the oil pump issues? Just the BRB engines had a crappy plastic chain tensioner as well.

Basically, yes. But the gear-driven ones give less hassle because they put less stress on the hex shaft.
