Do you have access to a ramp or 2 post lift or you're doing it on your drive ? I have done many of these and if doing it on the drive i suggest you take the engine out with the aid of an engine hoist/crane- much, much safer than rocking an gearbox under the car...
    Different cars same principals...

Ok, thanks, but taking the engine out to change the clutch seems like a lot of work, never changed a clutch on a passat but looking at the haynes manual seems easy enough,

I do it in 6 hours flat with plenty tea breaks ! If you never done it this way you will end up with a sore back- trust me, been there got the t-shirt ! If you have access to a ramp/hoist and have a mate to give you a hand then by all means, do-it the conventional way ! Just bear in mind that on some models the bellhousing does not slide over the subframe easily and getting the gear linkage + the slave cylinder on and off might prove a touch more difficult than it seems. As i said, we all get to the same results at the end of the day it's just easier the way i do it...

Chris is right, best way is to take the engine out recently did a clutch on a friends 1.9tdi and did it this way so much better than doing it lying on your back leave that to the girls also don't skimp on just the clutch do the DMF at the same time as you don't want to be doing the job twice

By Spooky coincidence i have been thinking of doing the clutch on my Tdi 4Motion using the engine removal method, and TBH I think it would be easier than removing the transmission.

Has anyone done a 4Motion this way? are there any pitfalls i have overlooked please?

there is no more work really doing a 4 motion than there is doing a standard FWD car the only thing extra that you need to do is disconnect the prop shaft but that is only 4 bolts if i remember correctly

One thing to remember is the propshaft bolts are very tight and you will need a good breaker bar + you need to mark the flange where it mates with the prop so they go the same way. here's another one i've done, this time on a AWX engined a4 which is identical to the passat bar the front bumper !

Hi like the idea of taking the engine out! question,, do you leave the gearbox as it is and move the engine to access the clutch?
