    Hi folks

been searching on the site about the problems with the epb and have found a lot of reading!

What i am trying to decide is whether i have a dodgy switch or its the parking brake motor that is the problem.

this is what vagcom is telling me....

so far i have still managed to get the car moving, but there has been a coulpe of times where i have needed to turn off the engine, pause, then turn back on, car in neutral, and press and hold the switch. this has then stopped the handbrake switch flashing and beeping and allowing me to release the handbrake.

My reckoning is that the motor isnt playing ball, and it isnt the switch, but how does one decide where the fault lyes (sp?)

    TIA!!!!

    Thanks Martin!

I have ordered up a new motor from eurocarparts, they didnt have just the motor, but had it with the caliper. they have given me a discount and are charging £155 for the caliper and motor, which is way way cheaper than main dealers!!

So having done a good search about changing the the brake pads, which includes using vcds, which i have, i am still looking for a step by step guide on how to change the motor, and caliper. Im sure it will become clear when i start to take things apart. but a step by step guide would be good if anyone has one! I'm not very technical and haven't changed a rear caliper/pads before. Willing to give it a go though.

    tia

It's just nuts and bolts. You will need to bleed the caliper afterwards. You could just swap the motor and keep your caliper on the car. That will take about half an hour. Then send the new caliper and old motor back for your surcharge refund. Some places don't care if you just send the new caliper back without the motor. The motors are scrap anyway.

Don't forget to retract the EPB motors (as far as possible) with VCDS. Think they also can be wound out manually too, but havn't tried that.

    thanks folks,

so the order will be something like..

1.jack up car on level surface without epb on, chocking the front wheels.
    2. wheel off
    3. Clear fault codes
    4. using vag com put the ebp/caliper on the 'service' position, or something like that.
    5. take off epb cable then unbolt the caliper and motor
    6. remove pads
    7. put old pads in new caliper
    8. reattach the caliper and motor and reattach the cable
    9. use vag com to reset the epb
    10. wheel back on
    11. exercise the epb

i'm sure there is more to it than that, so what am i missing?

When did you last change the rear pads? If within a few thou miles then existing pads should be alright
(dunno what the thickness is when thickness monitor comes on, got it written down somewheres will add if found)
Add to your list bleed off, might as well do good rear too if it's off the ground

just been reading through another 7 pages of epb stuff on a thread on here, and i'm thinking that the easiest way of doing things is to just have the epb off and then change the motor around on the old caliper for a new motor, yes?

i'm not going to be changing the pads by the way. all i want to change s the motor. The new motor is on the new caliper at the mo. But still a wee bit unsure as to how to progress. I am hoping to get a t it tomorrow if i get finished work early enough and perhaps all will become clear then.

Just another thought... if i have disconnected the power to the motor to carry out the change of motor, surely i don't need to be trickle charging the battery? or am i wrong?

    Hi.
Yes that is exactly what I would do.
In fact that is what I have done. No need for battery charging.
If your caliper is still in good shape I'd be inclined to sell your new on on fleebay.

Changing the motor is much easier than I think you are anticipating so don't worry about it too much. (;o)
Let Us know how you get on.
    Best
    Chris

Disconnect old motor connector. Undo two motor mounting bolts, pull off motor.
Replace motor with new one. make sure centre drive is aligned and ONLY push motor on by hand. Do not do bolts up until you are sure motor is fully on. NEVER use the bolts to pull the motor into place, the motor case may crack. Reconnect connector. Job done. Send new caliper back to factors for your return refund.
