2000 vw bora 1.6s helppppppp!!

I've just brought a vw bora 1.6s 2000 model (x plate) now I'm new to all this and confused so I'll try and explain my best. When I open the bonnet I have noticed that on the right hand side of the engine bay behind the battery there is a rather large empty space but it looks to me like there was ment to be something there as there is locations for bolts to go in. I was thinking this is where the air filter housing should be however it does have air pipes coming from the left hand side of the engine? I checked out a few adds and it was 50 50 there was some with the air filter on the right hand side but some with the pipes from the left and a gap being on the right as is mine. Now I understand there is different codes for these engines but I have not a clue about them and what they are for? Is there a way you can tell them apart? I believe mine is an AUS if anyone could help me it would be a great help.

The Haynes book seems to show the airfilter fitted over the engine at the back and some trunking behind the battery which might be ventilation intake
