Sorry, not sure what the official name for this stupid gadget is, anyhow-

does it control any part of the operation of the aircon or remote locking?

(both have never worked in my ownership since MAY 12 and there's evidence of previous flooding although definitely no such problem now)

    thanks in advance,

    mr n

Hi Peter, it does exactly nothing.
Having read (or tried to decipher) the owners manual I gather that the aircon is in almost constant use unless the 'econ' button is pressed?. I've tried having the temp down to 'low' and the blower on full blast/auto but gets no colder than having it on 'econ' at these settings.
I don't notice any weird noises etc (although the 1.9 lump is a noisy old thing to try to hear anything over), it just does nothing, not even the slightly smelly but cool dry air i used to get from my tired old bimmer.

I know the answer might be to get an aircon specialist to look at it but it'd be good to gather some clues!,

    cheers

    Mr n

So it lightsup, the fan blows at your request but it just does not get colder. What does the Econ light do and can you comfirm the magnetic clutch clunks in then you turn ecen off. What happens when you select screen defrost/mist. Regards Peter

Exactly as you say. The econ light goes on when button is pressed. I tend to leave it like this since finding sitcom inop. Screen defrost seems to work ok, it just blasts lots of air to the windscreen when pressed. I haven't checked the magnetic clutch is operating. Is this easy to do?, would I hear/see it if I was peering into engine bay?

Have you run a vcds scan for error codes? Could save a lot of time!
Re aircon, if you remove the front noise insulation, looking from underneath car, you can see the aux belt round the aircon pulley. Behind pulley is the magnetic clutch (if you have that type of aircon unit!). When ECON light is ON, aircon is OFF and only aircon pulley rotates. When ECON is turned OFF mag clutch engages with pulley and rotates with pulley - aircon is now active.
If ECON light can be turned on and off, then I would say all the above is working (if mag clutch does NOT engage, ECON light will stay ON). So problem looks to be elsewhere - faulty aircon unit, leak in system, system needs re-charging. Start with vcds scan.
