    Thanks Peter!, will do.
I also did another vcds scan of hvac (didn't know I had to scan this separately), it came up with a faulty air quality sensor, but it doesn't seem like this has any bearing on the compressor issue I have..
now to try and get some time with car & spanners...

So family issues, as they should, have taken priority over this little car issue so i'm no further along yet, but I have noticed the aux electric fan doesn't cut in with aircon on (econ button off), even with temp settings at 'LO' on climate control. Dunno if this has any bearing on anything...

    cheers!

    cheers!
Just replaced my aux electric fan on my 2002 Allroad after 4 years since it failed!. Failure of this fan does not affect aircon and no vcds fault will show up. In my experience this fan is only required on very hot days (not many of these in Scotland - but lots in south France!). On such a day IF the car is stationary and idling for a while, the aircon will start to blow hot. Drive on and the viscous fan easily copes with the arcon.
To check if the fan is goosed (it runs ALL the time when ECON button is off, so after a few years the brushes wear out), remove the connector near the power steering reservoir (remove plastic cover first) and, on the fan side connect an ohmmeter. If you get NO reading (as in my case) then the fan is faulty.
I had a go at repairing mine but the armature well worn. Also, you have to burr off the end plate (side where motor bolts onto fan) and be VERY careful reassembling if it was just the 4 brushes needing replacement. Having seen it, I would recommend a NEW fan. Downside - £240 new OEM or, in my case, £100 compatible. AND BEFORE ANONE CHIPS IN - the compatible ones CANNOT be any worse than the OEM piece of junk!

can anyone shed light on why the aux fan would be on all the time with econ button pressed, I mean what Is the purpose of that?,
It's not really necessary for the heater and deffo not for the cooling system (especially on a diesel), just curious

That makes sense but ceilidhalfie said it spins constantly when climate contr is in econ mode, surely evaporator isn't in use then?

ps is it possible to remove the aux fan without removing the front panel or am I dreaming?

WITH ECON OFF ie ECON light is OFF and thus aircon is running - aux fan is running.
If you wish to route the cabling of the new fan as per the old one and replace all the cable fasteners and ties, you need to put lock carrier in service position. Being a "picky" chap this is what I did.
Apparently, an alternative is to remove the top front driver's side cover of the cam belt - giving just enough room to get the fan out. You can then re-route the new cable over the top of the radiator to the connector at the power steering reservoir, leaving the old cable snipped and still in place.
    YOUR CHOICE!
