I am looking at doing the DIS retro fit as i now have the stalk. My question is will the wiper still work after i have fitted the stalk and before i put the car into Audi to be coded as i dont have VAGcom and i dont know anybody in my area with Vagcom to do the coding for me. The car is booked in for its MOT on the 20th and i dont want to go through fitting the stalk to find out that the wipers wont work and then have to remove it for the MOT.

Should do - it is a simple swap anyway so I would test it before "closing it all" back up. You will probably have to change the steering unit at well (if you don't have the correct one currently) - to do this you have to reprogram it to match the car/ reset the steering angle sensor.

If you are going to start retrofitting (it is a disease by the way) then I would advise you to buy Vagcom is it is invaluable.

From what I read in this forum because I already have cruise control (fitted at the factory) that I would not need to change the steering unit. I also thought that I couldnt turn the ignition back on until the job was complete to avoid getting airbag faults. Where is the best place to buy Vagcom & how much is it.

Vagcom (VCDS) is about £240 if i remember correctly. I bought mine from Gendan website.

I think he meant that you plug it all in, but perhaps don't screw the lower steering wheel cowling on etc. As you say, it's definitely not a good idea to turn the ignition on with no airbag connected.

And as for the steering wheel control module, if you have cruise fitted it should work fine as cruise requires a control module which should always work with dis (as far as i know). You can always check the ross-tech website as they are the company who make the VDS cable and have a guide. Also, if you had vcds you could plug it in and determine which steering module you had via vcds to save you taking anything apart.

    Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for your reply, i think that i will just wait until after the MOT as it is only on Monday before i look at changing the wiper stalk. I hope that you are right about not having to change the control module.

    Hi,

    1) If you have cruise control then you don't need to change the steering module
    2) since you are not changing the module, installing the new stalk will make no difference - DIS will not work until you enable using VagCom (everything else will though)
    3) you don't need to remove the steering wheel (as far as I remember -though it was a few years ago that I did it) to change the stalk so airbags will not be an issue
    4) Either way, disconnect the negative terminal on the battery before you start work (just to be safe)
    5) Since you don't need to change the steering module, you only need vagcom to enable the DIS (a 2 minute job)

If you need any more help, let me know.

    Hope this helps,

    Walter.

For a B6 car I thought a registered copy of VCDS Lite from either Ilexa or Gendan would do, no need for the HEX-CAN version?

    Correct me if I'm wrong.
Nothing to see here, move along..

After all the help given to me about this job you have thought that i would have checked to see if i had the right tools. I am missing the T8 to remove the steering wheel cowling (my set starts at T10) i am not happy. I will go and buy one tomorrow and try again. I found this pic on the internet and from the pic i believe that the steering wheel must be removed to change the stalk. Once again thank you for all your help.

You may well be right, I just have the full version so quoted that price. To be honest, I didn't know there was a legit lite version
