I have an 08 mk 5 GT Tdi 170 which has been in and out of the VW dealers recently due to hestitation on acceleration around 1800-2000rpm, a problem which is gradually getting worse. The problem is intermittent, sometimes it accelerates smoothly through 2000 revs but approx 50% of the time it will stutter for a second or two then take off as normal.
Initially no errors were being registered by the engine mgmt system, so VW had nothing to go on, they forced a regen thinking it could be DPF related, this seemed to work for a day or so but then recurred.
Now I am getting a combination of warning lights on the dash, either the amber DPF light comes on or an amber Engine Fault Workshop message appears with flashing amber coil and the car goes into limp mode.
From this latter error VW reckoned their diagnostics advised them to change the Turbo wiring loom at a cost of £200. Again this seemed to work for a day or two but now it's back to it's stuttering best!
If I add to this that it also cuts out occasionally, but only when I'm coming to a stop at lights for instance, but will restart straight away if I either let the clutch out or quickly turn the ignition off and on again.
VW dealer thinks the next step maybe to look at the Turbo but you can imagine I'm loath to fork out for further work if they aren't sure what the problem is.
Any ideas or advice for my tale of woe?

Firstly get your £200 back as their efforts have;nt worked. Secondly get a vw specialist local to you.

I have just been to a local VW specialist, they immediately sussed out it was all DPF related, they reduced the particulate build up from 63% to 20% and put some fluid into the tank which reduces the temperature at which the DPF gen takes place. Stuttering and warning lights all disppeared for now, but I'll keep an eye on it for a while before I claim a victory.
Totally agree about the £200, that's my next job!

    Hi guys,

Not meaning to hijack, my gt sport 170 tdi had the same problem, spent £290 on that wiring loom last thursdayl, doesn't work, stuttering again today, Waste of money.

But what I did notice was a load of oil over the alternator, looks like it coming from the intake manifold where it meets the block, most importantly it's fresh oil.

It might be a place to look for you aswell.

How did you get one getting your money back?

    Thanks

    Al
