My Mk5 1.9Tdi has been doing the exact same thing for a while now. It was very intermittent, sometimes whatever setting I started the car on it would stay on that, sometimes it would work, but now its stuck on cold only.

I had a garage do a diagnostics (about £63 at a VW garage, I did it at independent for £55 because I had a different fault they fixed, but I've been quoted £35 at kwik-fit previously). Mine requires a v68 flap motor to be replaced. I've been trawling these forums trying to find someone who has done this on a Golf mk5 before but so far haven't been able to.

I'm not saying that this is actually what needs replacing on yours, as I think there could be other motors attached to the system, but if it is then here is what I got quoted for prices:

Cost of v68 flap motor: £97
Cost of labour at independent garage: approx £157 based on 2.5 hours worth of work.
Cost of labour at vw Garage: £300.

The part is quite difficult to get to I believe as its located under the passenger side dash beneath the glove box - this is what I've read in the forums for Polo's.

If anyone has the instructions on how to replace a V68 flap motor on a Golf MK5 (plus pictures) that would be much appreciated. I'm currently in the process of buying VCDS, as I believe you have to do a reset, or adaptation as they call it for the new motor to work.

At the very least, does anyone know where I can find this? Is it on the passengers side or drivers side of a UK MK5 Golf (Right hand drive)? Once the glove box is out, how difficult is it to get to, and is it easy to determine which motor it is, as I believe there could be a few doing different things...

Not a mk5 but many times on a A4,the motors stick inside on the plastic gears,take the glove box out and ascertain which is sticking by operating on manual,the red lever is heat on a A4
