    Is this in the bonnet or under the rear wheel cowling?

    I'd say it's under the bonnet.

    A big cylinder with 4 (?) pipes clipped to it.

    If you find something similar post a pic and see if that's it.

    Both my A3 and A6 have the same looking fuel filter so I assume it will be the same for the B7.

    Thanks... Seems about right. I think I will change mine and see if that helps with the intermittent downage

    Under the bonnet, left hand side at the back. As Chris says it has 4 pipes going into it and is about the size of a beans can easy to change

    Also, can they be cleaned or just replaced?

    Hi,

    Some filters have the ability to be water-drained. I recently replaced mine located at back of engine to the left, very simple job, mine had no water-drain facility.

    There will be a screw of some sort, some have on bottom/top. You will leak water out until diesel flows out (i assume you have a diesel!). Id recommend changing totally if you having issues with your car. There is also a Fuel Pressure switch located on one of the pipes which is simple to replace too - I read on a forum that this can cause performance issues.
