Chassis numbers ending in 50000+ are ok, supposedly, I know one that wasn't btw.

Chassis numbers up to 3C-6E082-000 and 3C-6P070-000

used the old chain driven balancer shaft assembly which is prone to failure. After those numbers the system was cog driven so no chain to fail.

Pumps still fail because the drive shaft rounds off. If your worried, fit a new driveshaft to the S/H engine. It don't take long and only costs a few pounds.

Hi I have just purchased a Passat 57plate 170PD with a BMR engine code that has been maintained impeccably by its previous owner (service at least every 10k and replacement parts etc) however I am concerned about the oil pump having read online.

    My Chassis number is:
    WWWZZZ3CZ8EO18284

It has 100k miles on the clock and I was hoping for a workhorse up to 200k.

Is this a gear or Chain driven oil pump?

Would you buy a KMB kit, just change the hex key or just drive it until it fails?

Any advice greatly appreciated………. My mk5 golf 1.9tdi did 250k no issues and only serviceable items…..maybe they don’t make them like the olden days 😂

They didn't make the 3C2 like the old days that's for sure! I'd change it now as prevention as failure could be anytime depending on use, mileage, maintenance and whether the original 77mm Allen bar "key" is off centre and by what tiny margin. Mine failed at 148k, after 70k of some good right foot use and mixed journeys, slow, moderate and fast, some fail earlier, others slightly later. Most have significant wear when inspected before failure (not all but no wear highly unlikely).

Gear driven most likely as is my 07 plate, kit 9, done this at least 4 times now, twice on my 170 BMR (didn't go KMB the first time (148k), 2nd failure after 40k of the 'new' shaft (188k) and at 4500 revs up an incline at 60mph, took out the turbo, lesson learned!) Now KMB re-engineered shaft installed. No other significant damage and now at 227k).

Cost for DIY somewhere around £250 to £300 all in with exchange shaft, 100mm drive bar, new balance unit mounting bolts, oil pickup seal, sealant for sump (Dirko grey) and timing / locking tools. There are others out there that now do a cheaper version of what KMB do with the shafts but my first replacement shaft was an inferior item and lasted only 40k.

Thanks Mad Mitch seems like you have a wealth of experience with this motor. I think I will go with the KMB shaft and hex as they have confirmed mine is gear driven and indeed kit 9.
Now onto the job itself. My local specialist isn’t exactly enthralled by the idea of doing this job however I am slowly talking him into it as he is doing my Cambelt/water pump etc shortly😂. He has advised that there wouldn’t be any warranty surrounding this particular job either 😳.
I want to just hand him all that he needs and pay for the labour ideally. Do I need to purchase additional bolts etc as I have read about ‘stretch bolts’ being one use only? If so do you know what I need and where these can be purchased.
Overall although this is a pain I’m happy to pay the money and take the chance, especially as my car appears to have already had all the ‘common issues’ already. If it then delivers me a good few years and 200k trucking to the airport and back I’ll be a happy enough chap.
Thanks for all your help, most appreciated.

At the same time as the timing belt job is a good idea as the timing would be locked to TDC for that anyway.

The bolts I sourced from VW but I hear TPS may also do them. I actually have the old ones stuck in a piece of card in the garage for sizing reference. Your nearest VW parts desk should be able to tell you which 8 bolts you need for your balance unit version (there are 2 or 3 different units which have different mounting bolts). The balance unit halves are held together with bolts that I re-used each time and tightened to a fairly tight setting. It is awkward due to the shape and weight of the unit, it's pretty darn heavy.

I have the official workshop procedure in PDF if you want it? PM me your email address and I'll send it over.

Your mechanic should have no problem doing the job as my first time was outside of my house using axle stands, in the cold, with just a head torch, finishing at 2am as I needed the car for work that day. No real workshop facilities nor a lift.

There is an alignment tool that is needed to set the shaft in the right place when refitting the unit, which can be sourced from eBay and the like (it is a hefty £22.50 from KMB).
