1.2 6v BBM petrol high mileage

Hi

Buying a VAG group car with the 1.2 litre 6v 3 cylinder engine. The engine code is BBM and the car has done 110k miles, going to hopefully seal the deal tomorrow but is there anything to look out for / common faults with this engine?

I'll be taking VAG-COM with me as peace of mind.

Also do any of you know if it is a cam chain or a cam belt?

It's a chain. At some point the chain tensioner design was changed, can't remember when. Pre-change engines can jump a notch on start when the oil pressure is low, bending the valves.

The exhaust valves do go on these, resulting in low compression and a nasty bill to re-seat them.

But my Polo is on 129,800 miles at the last count, and, present wheel bearing issues excepted, is fine. If you're thinking of doing high mileages though then go for the diesels, apparently the 1.4 TDI is much more reliable than the 1.2 petrols, not to mention the better fuel economy!
