My Mk4 Golf ARL has started blue smoking quite badly, but only around 12-1600 rpm when the engine is pulling/working, or just as you set off from the lights etc, its also got a funny 'wizzing' noise (best way I can describe it!) when the turbo is boosting. Ive had boost pipes pop off before, but this time the noise is definatley different, and there is no loss of power. Its NOT the usual turbo whistle - that is there too. There is no smoke on tick over and it runs otherwise sweet as a nut!

Ive checked all the boost pipe joints, one side of a clip had poped out slightly but its now back in place and all are secured by cable ties/jubilee clips to stop them seperating again. After I resecured the pipe onto the intercooler (Near side), I took it a run round the block and all seemed fine, but the following morning on the drive into work, the wizzing and smoke are back. There is no loss of power. The camshaft was replaced 14 months ago and the car is on 111000mls. I cant see any splits in the vacuum pipes. There is some oil in the boost pipes, but no more than 'normal'.

    Any ideas anyone?

Following further running.... the 'wizzing' noise is more a 'zzzzzzzzzzz' noise(!) which is only noticable around 1900 rpm and gets louder/more pronounced the higher the rpm goes. The smoke and the noise only start to appear once the engine has warmed up to around 70-80 deg. Once warm, and whilst stationary, reving the engine will produce the smoke, but not the noise!

Ive noticed that the vacuum/fuel tandem pump is leaking out of the black plastic end cover (That is secured with torx screws). Could this have anything to do with the problem???

I sorted the turbo issue......with a new turbo! OUCH!

Having undone the exhaust from the turbo to test for play in the shaft, I found one of the turbine blades had about an 1/8th of an inch broken off the end.

Yeah, ouch! How big an ouch was it? Does this mean you've got rid of the 'zzzzzzzzzz' but not the smoke?

I was lucky with the price of the turbo......I dropped on a genuine VW new one from a VW parts suppliers on ebay for £480! The funny 'wwzzzzzzzz' noise did go as a result of the new turbo.

Not sure what was causing the smoking - possibly crap Tesco's diesel?!? Went on a trip to Aberystwyth and after arriving there the smoke had cleared and hasnt reocurred since. (This was before fitting the turbo).

sue Tesco. they were in trouble a few years ago for having crappy fuel, loads of cars were damaged and I think they paid to get peoples cars fixed. The intercooler pipe popped of my 130 on my way home tonight. I thought my turbo had gone. 2 hours later when the recovery truck turned up he sorted it out. I couldnt see it out when I looked over it. humph.

It wasn't just tesco, it was several supermarkets in certain regions, certainly not across the board and it was a faulty batch of fuel which contained silicone, iirc.

They paid to repair customer vehicles that had used the faulty fuel as they would have recouped the expense from their fuel supplier.

I doubt that's the cause of the op's problem if I'm honest.
