    hi
might have the opportunity to buy a high mileage company car, a golf 2009 (bought new sept 09, mk5?) turbo diesel (105bhp?) at some point in the next year. Mileage will be around 100k. Presumably it will have a dpf. We would use it around 10k a year, with some regular motorway long journeys as well as local trips, only thing is it will sit unused for a few months at a time when we are abroad. Would this period of unuse have a detremental affect on the dpf, clog up perhaps? Also what is the lowdown on this component, am I likely to face a hefty bill or can they run upto 160k plus? It may actually be a step too far for me, I do all my own mechanics, finding my current 05 golf so far an easy car to work on. Thanks

Mileage isn't a problem for the 1.9 TDi especially that one as its end of production with all updated and new parts.

To keep your Dpf clear just take it on a 30 minute run once or twice a week at a speed of 55mph in 4th to allow the car to burn the soot off - if you do this religiously you're sorted.

When the car is sitting unused the filter won't be working as the car is switched off.

    ^^^WHS^^^

I bought a 58-plate Blue Motion about three months ago. It has 112K on the clock, but an excellent service history (right down to wiper blades!). I will be doing most of my own maintenance (time, space and equipment permitting!) but I'm only doing about 4K miles a year, so the "high" mileage isn't a problem. However, I live 15+ miles from town, so it does get a reasonable run every week. The DPF does get a little "full" now and then - the gear change indicator tells me to drop a gear (or two) now and then in slow traffic, but that soon clears the filter enough for the blast home to get it properly blown out.

The only time it would block up is if you spent most of your time in slow queues in town - otherwise there should be no problem. Coincidentally, the local garage had two cars in with DPF problems the day I collected mine! They reckoned they'd never had issues before though and blamed the drivers for not giving the cars a thrashing now and then to clear the filter out. Looking at the forum before I bought the car, I was almost expecting doom and gloom - but there are very few DPF issues mentioned and nothing major. So don't believe Watchdog's hysteria and enjoy the car!

edit: funny how you see the typos AFTER pressing the submit button!
