Hi all, right I'm trying to rule out the ECU whilst trying to sort out my 1.4 cutting out. All I need to know is can Vag Tacho code in and make work-

    1. A replacement ECU of the same part number
    2. A replacement set of clocks of the same part number (old clocks are playing up that's why I want to swap them).

Is the SKC code in the clocks or the ECU? Just need know before chucking any more money at it for no reason.

By the way I have had the car plugged in and it is throwing up fault codes for stuff I have already replaced (codes were cleared) hence why I want to rule out the ECU.

    Thanks Gareth

so what codes are coming up. just because a code shows for a particular part doesn't always mean the replacing it will cure the fault.

00518 Throttle valve potentiometer-G49 Short to ground
00513 Engine speed sensor-G28 implausible signal
00281 Vehicle speed sensor R/P- G68 implausible signal (not 2 worried about that 1)

Symptoms are- Car runs fine when cold, once it gets warm it cuts out on over run or light throttle. When it cuts out though the rev counter drops instantly e.g cuts ignition, normally cuts back in again after a couple of seconds but the odd time you have to knock the key back and turn it back on again (whilst still moving) to get power back. Also when warm it runs fine on the spot but if you turn the steering on the spot it again cuts the ignition and it dies. Even if you rev it on the spot and turn the wheel it just dies. It'll run all day on tickover as long as you don't touch the steering wheel. Seriously doing my head in now, considering selling it that's how bad it's getting now!

    Thanks Gareth

    Coilpack (new)
crank sensor (used but made no difference)
    Camshaft sensor (again used)
Throttle body taken off and cleaned (made it run a bit smoother)

Did an engine swap last year due to cambelt tensioner failing and has been good as gold for 9 months then developed miss-fire. Can't understand what componant would be breaking down only when hot. If it was a wiring fault then it would be a more irregular fault, also if it was still crank sensor then surely it would struggle to start. Speedo stopped working after I swapped the engine and even 2 VW specialists can't find the road speed sensor on the gearbox! It's a 98 1.4 with an AHW engine. Really reluctant to sell it but i'm not chucking money at if forever just to have a car that's only any good to go into town on a cool day lol.

I have a 199.5 vw jetta vr6 AFP!I am getting many electrical short to ground codes and i cleaned the terminals under the battery box and the car is still running really rough and really rich! I noticed that on the alternator there is a visible nut that is on a screw and there is no wire attached to it! The kid i bought the car from just had the alternator replaced. The camshaft sensor also had oil in the plug and was bad and i replaced it and still runs rough and when i down shift it pops like a lil bit of backfiring going on! My MIL and ABS and a the other lights in the middle cluster will not illuminate and my temp gauge is also not moving.I am going to check the converter to see if it is clogged but i want to figure out the electrical short faults that i am getting! Where do all the wires from the alternator run to and where are all the major grounds for the car i cant find that info! New plugs, coilpack, cam shaft sens, oil pan,thermostat,100 and 409 relay also replaced the TPS sensor. Here is the scan! Any help would be great this is my first V-DUB!

You would need VCDS to code in a new ECU it's a lot cheaper than VAG tacho too. You'll need the pin code for your car and the donor ECU pin if it's second hand. Depending on the age of the car you can get the PIN from a main dealer or a good locksmith. ECM and cluster swapping for Immobilizer 3 - YouTube
