Mk3 golf vr6 won't start

Bought the car as a non runner that was leaking water. Replaced thermostat housing and all seems ok but it just won't start. Turns over but not firing. I've noticed if I leave the cap off the header tank and turn the ignition over it sprays all the water ou of the bottle. I'm sure that's not right!

Any ideas what's going on?

sounds like your head gasket has blown hence the water spraying out its being pressurized by the cylinders pull out plugs and see if there wet from water check dip stick for creamy coulored oil

Sounds like head gasket or gaskets you'd need to pull the heads off

Your both right, the head gasket was destroyed. Replaced new and new plugs, leads and few other bits. Over all £220 to repair. Sid work myself and it started first time! Tweaking here n there and making body mint. Happy days. Thanks for the feedback guys
