hello all and what an awesome site im a new vw owner my first mk3.
just brought my vr6 mk 3 auto and have a couple of questions 1st is my auto trans it will go from 1/2/3 manually brilliantly but when in drive it pulls of so slowly as if its in limp mode none of the gears slip and work fine until in drive mode there's no kick down or gear change its like its stuck in 3rd gear. its due for a service all around and will be done by me very mechanically minded have done heaps of car mods repairs engine swaps etc. now can anyone help me out with all ideas fixes for the trans please.
2 have misfire when warm at idle not under load could it be plugs coil pack etc.
    .
all help would be very much appreciated

The sluggish take off could just be low ATF so that needs checking which is not a five minute job. During a service it should be scanned so that will show if there are nay fault codes. The misfire could be the coil pack suffering from its usual cracking problem (this is the later unit with a different plug)

or poor leads shorting out in the head or even duff plugs, these engines are very fussy over spark plugs and I have found they will only run at their best on the NGK BKR5EKU.

How did you judge the level of the fluid, engine running or not and at what ATF temperature?

    This is the VW procedure

    Checking ATF level

Gearbox must not be in emergency running mode when ATF level is checked.
Vehicle on level surface, handbrake set
Selector lever at „P“ and engine running at idle.
When cold, ATF must be filled to the 20° C mark.
Raise ATF to operating temperature (about 60° C).
The operating temperature is measured with the fault reader
Check ATF level again and top up or extract as necessary.
ATF level must strictly be between Min. and Max. marks.

    WARNING

An ATF level which is too low or too high will impair the function of the gearbox. Therefore, the ATF level must be checked regularly.

It MUST be checked and filled with the engine running at idle. You just use normal ATF.
