While cleaning my car the other day I noticed the section of grill plastic that sits right infront of the air intake. As you can see in the picture it's got a section with squares cut into it. Presumably, the intention was that you can punch them out to get cold air directly into the intake rather than it having to go next to the radiator.

Does anybody know which countries, if any, had the holes punched out as standard?
I guess the only reason not to do it in the UK would be to reduce bugs/debris getting through to the filter.

Has anyone got the holes punched out on their car? Would you bother doing it to get ever so slightly cooler air going in?

Strangly enuff mate i was about ot start a thread on this subject.

I had a X reg 2000 Passat B5.5 TDI in the other day for a cam belt and inter cooler service, it did have the holes cut out, and not buy the owner, they was done by VW, So you can get a nose grill with the holes cut out,

BUT, why would they stop selling Passat TDI's with the holes cut out? Was there an issue?

    It could be water damage.
I believe if you hit a big puddle hard it jumps strait into the air intake...
