Hi all, glad to be part of what seems to be a great forum..I'm in the Market for a b6 passat estate..1.9tdi or 2.0tdi and I'm hoping some of you members could maybe help me by giving me a few pointers as to what to look out for regarding these vehicles, when buying,at the moment I own a awful piece of French engineering by the name of a c4,a truly awful motor car in every sense of the word, from the way the seat belt cuts through your neck,or the way the air filter is so far back in the engine bay u have to dismantle half the car just to get at it or even the way the glove box breaks every other month sighhhhhh the list goes on..but hopefull things will change with the purchase of a quality german vehicle..looking forward to reading your replies.. Thanks in advance gj

Welcome to the forum! It certainly is a great resource for help and advice for any Passat B6 model...

Although I don't own a TDI variant, I know that you are probably best looking for a post-58 plate car as they moved to a common-rail TDI engine with improved reliability. Also remember that forums are for people who have problems to share, don't be put off by this - all cars will have their problems, but I am sure that you will find every aspect of the Passat an improvement on the Citroen C4. In fact, a 55-plate Passat with dodgy injectors, dodgy turbo and rattly trim would probably be better than a Citroen

What age are you looking at, or rather, what is your budget?

Hi thanks for replying back,il be looking for around a 07 model would maybe consider a o6 with low miles, any model I decide for will have to have a Fsh..my budget will be around 5-7k , to be honest I'm already a bit confused about the different types of diesel engine,3 different variants I believe...a 1.9pd a 2.0pd and also a 2.0cr ? What does the cr mean ? And as for bhp it seems they range from 105 - 170 .. Il keep on searching but in the mean time if any other members could maybe explain to me the differences in the engines I'd be mighty appreciative

The PD is 'Pump Duese'. Basicly, every injector was also its integral high pressure pump. These work off cam lobes to pressurise the fuel. The advantage was very high injection pressure, alot higher than normally seen and thus creates lots of torque. The engine seemed very reliable in the 1.9, 8 valve version, ive had one for 162'000 trouble free miles and it still pulls like a train! VW then used the same system in the 2 litre 16 valve unit that didnt fare so well. This was partly due to using Siemens Piezo injectors which proved diastrous for VW. They issued a recall for every car effected. After the PD unit came the CR, stands for 'common rail' and seems much better. They also have gone back to using Bosch injection equipment I believe.
Personally, if i was going for a PD engined Passat again, I'd go with the 1.9, 8 valve. Having said that, you could get a 2 litre PD engine and cover 300'000 miles without an issue!

Hi there, we have both cars. Mrs Rappy Citroen C4 and me a Vw Passat. Both have been ultra reliable. I have had my passat 2 and a half years. Mrs Rappy has had her C4 coupe for 4 years. The Vw feels more solid but thats it.
