    Hi,

I have the problem that one of the green indicator "Tell Tales" on the dash-board isn't working. There is still the buzzing noise that tells you the indicator is on but not green light. Have checked the actual indicators and they are okay, as are the hazards lights.

Am looking up on the net and am confused over the regs for the MOT - one document I read said that you need either the lights or the noise and that the hazards work. Other info states that both Tell Tales must work.

Hoping that either someone can confirm either way i.e. it will pass or fail and...

If it fails - does anyone have a recommendations for somewhere to either take the car (Near Southampton) or to send off the instrument cluster to get a new LED soldered onto it.

    Any info would be great.

    Thanks,

    John

Ive failed an MOT a few years back on the same thing with a BMW, it made the noise and the indicators worked but the green arrow indicator light didnt light up on the dash, are you sure you need to get a new LED soldered in? In all the cars Ive had usually all it requires is to put a new bulb in the instrument cluster and is quite a straightforward job.

Can anyone with a workshop manual actually confirm or deny this please.

New MOT regs just came in state ALL dash lights (inc warning lights) must be present and work correctly.

EDIT: thought I had found some useful links for you but I have removed them as they were for the older model.(was 1/2 asleep when I posted)

    Thanks,

Think you're right - it will be a failure so will have to get it sorted.

Think it's fairly straightforward to get the cluster out - just worried about having to take all the needles off without damaging them.

I read the bulbs were soldered onto the circuit board and its quite fiddly to do the job so any advice from anyone who has done the job before would be great.

wouldnt the needles stay on Im pretty sure it would a complete unit with access to the bulbs etc via the back, probably a few clip on connector plugs to remove and hey presto. (Im guessing) If I was in your shoes I would take the unit off and take a look it could be simpler than you think.

One of these maybe? Dont buy that one though have you seen the price!

Update for anyone who is interested..

The indicator bulb is a LED soldered onto the circuit board. You have the option of removing all the needles and the white plastic support to get to it or the more fiddly job of just peeling back the water temp display and soldering inside the plastic surround.

HOWEVER.. the car passed the MOT without the green light flashing on the basis that the tell-tale must work, the tell-tale being the audible beeping noise when you indicate.

There is very useful document on the net "DIS LCD Repair" which tells you how to get the cluster out and on the work bench and some useful tips on how not to balls it up!!

    Cheers

glad you got it sorted, damn that MOT man that failed me lol I even mentioned to him I could still hear it even if I couldnt see it, the thing about an MOT is a lot of it is at the testers discression, get a fussy one you could be in trouble, get a sloppy fella he'll pass almost anything (Ive had one pass with an ABS light on - technically it shouldnt have).

Edit: heres the official line lifted from the current MOT testers manual:- Check the driver's 'tell-tale' warning device for presence and operation. Note: A 'tell-tale' may be audible or visual, it is not required if one or more direction indicators on each side can be seen by the driver from the driver's seat. It may help someone in the future.

So if you install door mirror indicators which you can also see, you can pass that way.
