I have a 1yr old Mk5 Golf 1.4 with 13k miles. I have owned it for 3 months and have noticed a scraping sound when the brakes are applied at low speed. The sound is similar to that given off when the pads are worn down to metal though not as harsh or alarming. The dealers have examined the brakes and pads and cannot find any fault and claim that the noise may be down to rust on the discs (though this is definately not the case).
I then spoke to a service mechanic at another VW dealers who confirmed that VW were aware that approx 25% of Mk 5 Golfs suffer this noise but as yet could not identify the exact cause. The mechanic speculated that it could be an inherent design fault concerning the type of metals/materials used. He did reassure me that there was no question of the brakes not being safe.
The noise is annoying and concerning and may affect resale value. The dealership from which I purchased the car are reluctant to make any comment / acknowledgement that there is a problem.
Any advice / comments would be appreciated.

If thay are having difficulty acknowleding the problem exists, take someone from the dealership for a ride and let them hear it for them selves. They shouldnt have a problem then.

Same problem here, '05 GT TDI. The brakes work fine, just sound bad. The car's done nearly 30K miles now, and there doesn't seem to be excessive wear lines on the discs, and I'm still on the first pads, so I guess it's OK.

Many thanks for your response. It seems to be an inherent design characteristic, maybe the materials used ? Glad to hear the brakes have not caused you any problems other than the noise. Will have to monitor them over next few months and ask dealership to reexamine at next service.

A3 also suffers with this irritation and the only resolve is to replace the pads and the discs(not warranty)past 6000 miles. The pad material seems to be the source, but again its irritating but not defective.
