the lights on our 2002 1.9tdi sport have failed, only side lights on dipped beam, then on main beam we get outer lights but no inner ones.

This is not likely to be fuses and I suspect a relay..........but where are the light relays?

    Help appreciated thanks guys

I would suspect the switch itself, try to get a spare one to try.

its my wifes car this, so not sure on things ;0)

What should be on for dip and main? outers on dip and all four on main?

It is curious that there is nothing on dip and only outers on main!

If fuses 20 and 21 are intact but the main beams work OK and so does the blower fan, glove box light and wipers, this points to the headlight switch as if the X relay was at fault or the ignition switch was not putting out its X signal, other parts would not work.

Thanks for the help so far, I am puzzled with this one so will outline the symptoms again. I dont want to waste cash and time pulling the car apart to do the wrong part!

Everything works except the headlight fault and the existing dodgy radio reception!
Sidelights come on with the turn switch and panel illumination all comes up.
Turn it to main light position with stalk in dip beam position and sidelights stay on but NO headlights.
If the headlight stalk is moved to high beam the outer dipped headlights come on!! but no inner main lights.
Put it back to dip and it only has sidelights..no dipped outer lights though they work in main beam position.
It is worth noting the blue hi beam indicator on dash works suggesting the stalk hi/lo switch works?

What puzzles is the fault is on both dipped and main beam, on dip it only has sidelights but then on main the dip lights come on but not the extra main lights.

I am unsure whether to try the stalk switch. the light master switch or relays ;0(

The only relay is the X relay and if this was faulty other systems would play up. The other symptom points to head headlight switch in my opinion.

hi, Crasher thanks for your time. Do you mean the master turn switch or the stalk? does the wiring link back from the stalk to the main master switch?

I struggle to see how the lights do what they are! but then I'm better with 40 year old cars with simple wiring

Sorry if this is teaching you to suck eggs, but you have checked the bulbs haven't you? It's not uncommon to hear of both bulbs failing at the same time.

yes, thanks for the reminder NickPicks but I checked all four. I made progress today, in for a penny! I took the master light switch out the dash and pulled it apart EEK.

Then sprayed switch clean in it and fiddled about. I now have 4 lights working!

What I need to know, call me silly but I never looked. Are the inner pair or outer pair the dipped on a 2002 tdi sport? I have inners on dips then outers and inners on main...must say usually outers are dip!

Anyone with one of these checking would be appreciated in case I got any wrong with the bits in that switch

I was going to clarify by saying the dash main switch but half way through my PC went blue screen and then I had to do something else.
