Right where to start. 07 Plate B6 Sport with 88K on the clock, mostly Motorway miles.

Regularly serviced at VW, and had cambelt change etc etc.

The issue i have is when i start to manoeuvre, it sounds like i have a puncture or something stuck on the tyres. The more i speed, the faster this sound becomes.

It is really loud on round-about, and the faster I speed the faster this noise becomes then eventually disappears at high speeds (or I can’t hear it). I can’t tell at all on Motorways due to the speed.

I have had the front 2 replaced in April as part of the MOT and back 2 are fine. And i have checked air pressure etc every week. All is good.

So what could the problem be? Is it tyre related or something else?

    Advise please.

    Thanks

It could be something stuck touching a brake disc but my guess is a faulty tyre, nail etc. Take the wheels off and have a look. This can be very dangerous if the webbing construction of the tyre is damaged I have seen tyres bulge like balloons because of this.

Thanks for that. I don't know much about the ins and outs but i can certainly take each tyre off and give it a once over.

So i'll look for the obvious like nails etc. And also the shape???

Anything else i could check whilst i have them out?

Cheers. How would i check the wheel bearing?

Friend of mine suggested swapping each type with the spare and have a drive. See if it IS one of the tyres

You need to Jack the wheel off the ground and with your hands at 6 and 12 o'clock. Wriggle the wheel from side to side and top to bottom.....any more than about 1/8 inch of play and the bearing will need replacing. Also rotate the wheel.....any major friction or grinding noise could also be indicative of a failing bearing.

You don't need to remove the wheel if you're carefully. Jack up the car. put you're hand against the inside wall of the tyre, the one you can't see and slowly rotate the tyre to feel for anything odd. Do the same on the outside, don't just look. Then do the same for the tread. Don't turn the wheel too fast, I once saw someone get a piece of metal through their hand after spinning the wheel to check it. A damaged tyre or something like a nail in a tyre will make a noise similar to your description.

Thanks both. I'll give it a shot this weekend. Really frustrating as dont know what it is or which wheel it's coming from.

Out of interest, how much would the wheel bearing cost @ dealers?

A bearing is about £90, it comes as part of the hub.

    Hi all, an update

Took the car to Kwik Fit for them to have the tyres checked on the ramp. It looks like the back 2 have "feathered". He showed me while spinning, it doesn't spin in a circle but has this a little bobble.

It then occurred to me whilst driving home that this could be the "Saw Tooth" effect? WOuld that make the same find of noise?

The tyres still has some life left but will change it in a couple of weeks but before i do, might even have it laser alligned.
